Is it worth upgrading my Intel i7 2600K?
Been rocking this build for 5-6 years but im starting to feel some major hang time when I load onto my desktop. Also the more I overclock it, the louder the pc gets and im thinking of energy saving. Im gonna be moving to my new house in jan/Feb so I dont wanna be dealing with this upgrade nd♥♥♥♥♥♥while im doing up my house. So I wanna get it out the way before then. Im gonna go 2k ultrawide with a new gpu soon so im alright with that.

CPU used to be a beast back then. Still is to be fair. It just takes the piess to load windows 10 and I have to overclock it to play the latest games smoothly to avoid bottleneck, which makes it louder even when using the best CPU cooler in that intel gen. Ryzen 1500X or 1600 a good idea or shall I keep my pc?

Intel i7 2600k - 3.4GHZ (4.6GHZ OC)
Asus Maximus V Gene Motherboard
GPU: AMD R9 380 (OC)
Hyper x Genesis 8GB 1333MHZ Ram
120GB Seagate Harddrive (Main operating system)
1TB Seagate Hard drive
500GB Samsung Hard drive
OCz 750W PSU
Noctua D-14 Cooler

Im a technician with a technical problem. Could you help a brother out?

You're heavily GPU choked, i7 2600k 4.6ghz still fine.

http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/76333-i7-2600k-vs-i7-8700k-upgrading-worthwhile-15.html

Ps, beefing up your ram would be a good idea too, 8GB is a bit sparse these days.

I know the GPU is bottlenecking the cpu but thats not the case. Im talking about when I turn on my pc, it takes long to load everything up. And does it take a lot of energy compare to the new cpus out there or its not much of a difference?

If none of those drives are an SSD I'd suggest you get an SSD for the OS asap if you're looking for speed booting up.

The whole electricity cost improvement argument is a bit weak when it's only 1 or 2 PCs involved.

ive got a 3770k @ 4.2ghz and a gtx 1070@1080p and it works great cards always at 99% if the game is newer of course

not really worth upgrading since theres about 5-7% difference between generations (almost no difference between skylake and haswell ie 4790k vs 6700k clock for clock) and if you have k series for each generation they overclock less and less. 2600k has been taken to 5ghz whereas its very difficult if not down right impossible to get 3770k or 4770k the same kinda oc

i also have 16gb ddr3 2133 ram though

Okay thanks, so shall I just upgrade the ram size and frequency and get some SSD instead or getting a ryzen? What about the noise in my pc? How do I reduce it? Ive installed a program called "speedfan" but it only values the case fans in my build.

well you have the nh-d14 cooler rated to (accoding to noctua itself) 165w+oc capable. regardless its one of the best you can get without liquid cooling and its fans only reach 19.8dba so it shouldnt be that providing the fans arent wearing out.. perhaps some of the case fans (1 or more) are starting to wear but thats a very cheap fix and can be determined by unplugging just one at a time if there are many

edit: whats the 120gb seagate drive?? thats an odd size commonly used for ssd size.. unless its a really old hard drive but that would be odd

Post a cpu-z validation to clear up what parts are all in there as in HDDs.

You have a good hsf it shouldn't be loud so maybe fans are running %100 or worn out same goes for case fans .

Dust can make cpu/gpu/case/psu fans loud if they get plugged up, blow everything out if it's dusty.

Cooler is quiet when running at 4.0ghz overclock. After you crank it up you can hear it a bit. I want it silent. I cant slow the cpu fan down on the bios or on the speedfan program, only the case fans, its weird.

Its a 120GB seagate hard drive i bought a while back on amazon. Only to boot my pc. 1tb hdd for my steam+origin games and 500gb hdd for movies and music. Most of them are almost full

Ill look into it tomorrow after work. Cpu fams seem to run to the fullest. Theres gotta be a solution noise.

just look for the price, which means: as always the more expensive a cpu is the faster ist is. amd or intel dont matter. its nearly all the same...imo.

Ok, so old 120GB HDD explains the slow boot times then, switch over to a 240GB or over ssd for OS.

The old HDD probably only reads at 70ish MB/s vs SSDs at 450+ MB/s and even modern 3TB 7200rpm HDDs read 195ish MB/s, HDTume or Crystal Mark benchies would tell you how badly the 120GB HDD is doing.

It's minimal like 5% but there is. This was with Titan X Maxwell so the difference was smaller, with 1080 Ti it's about 10% clock for clock.

You are better off just buying an overclocked 1080ti.

I run an i7-2600 at 4.2ghz and overclocked 1080ti at 4k resolution. Works well.

If you want a significantly faster cpu then a coffeelake i7 or i5-8600k would be the way to go - as long as you have the oc'ed 1080ti.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6dHCQOt5Nns

Regarding noise, I have a 1000W psu and it hardly ever turns on the fan. The 1080ti has 3 fans and using the software that comes with runs quietly because I set the max temp to 65C. The cpu has a cheap aftermarket cooler - single fan, the bigger the blades the better (less turbulence - less noise). The system can throw out a fair amount of heat when it gets going, so I leave uff a side panel to give it the coolest possible air. No case fans (no fans = no noise). Overall it's very quiet even when running flat out.

With an SSD it boots in about 10-15 seconds.

Also note that as the screen size increases it's the gpu that needs increasing more than the cpu.

yeah but the problem with this video is its stock cpus i wouldnt pair a i7 2600k STOCK with 1080ti
also op never said he was using a 1080ti

overclocked it does pretty well so much so if fact that ts not really worth going to new generation unless your going with coffelake/high end ryzen for the multicore performance

i stated i was happy with my oced 3770k@4.2ghz + gtx 1070 id pair it with a gtx 1080 as well

Depends, the Lake gen CPU is slightly faster IPC wise clock for clock. For most its not worth it but if you chase the last bit of fps it is. It's just like Ryzen vs Intel, Intel CPU is still faster but is it worth the price or not for most people.
