Why does my new laptop score so low compared to similar specs on CPU and GPU benchmarks?
I am super desparate, hopefully someone can help me out!

I am facing a severe issue with my factory-new laptop. I bought it literally 2 days ago and did not install any software apart from Steam and Total War Rome II.

This is my computer (more details are in the benchmark links):
HP Pavillon
GeForce GTX 1050 Ti
i7 7700HQ
16GB RAM
Windows 10 Home

Upon installation of the computer, the game ran fine, absolutely no problems. Then, I had to do the 1709 Windows Fall Creators Update. I did some web search and this update has been known to cause problems with NVIDIA video cards. After the update, when going into the game, the screen always turned black during loading sequences and there was a band of flickering colours at the top of the screen. It looked really bad (the colours were bright, like neon green and violet) . During the game itself, the screen kept flickering and the game crashed multiple times. I tried reinstalling drivers etc., but at the end I factory-resetted the laptop and somehow managed to run the game stable.

However, I felt that the frame rates dropped considerably. To verify this, I did some benchmarks with 3DMARK. Indeed, I am always a lot below other laptops with exactly the same specifications. Here some of the benchmarks:

1) After update with old driver
http://www.3dmark.com/cg/4162377

2) After update with most recent driver
http://www.3dmark.com/cg/4162389

3) After update, but rolled back to previous build of Windows
http://www.3dmark.com/cg/4162402

4) After complete, clean slate factory reset
http://www.3dmark.com/cg/4162435

Do you think it is possible that my GPU is broken or got damaged?

How can it be that my new laptop performs so badly compared to laptops with similar specs?

And finally, how can it be that exactly the same laptop has different MHz for GPU in the benchmark (compare benchmark 1, 2 vs. 3). How can this be explained?

I am sorry for the long post, but I am honestly desparate about what is going on here...

After the 1709 update you will need to re-install all of your drivers for your hardware, as this "patch" replaces genuine drivers with MS "generic" ones, grab the latest Nvidia drivers, then
run DDU : http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html

then install the new drivers after the reboot..

Thanks - I tried that, but still the fps were low. Also, I have poor benchmarks after a complete reset of the computer, so pre 1709 update (see benchmark 4 above). Any ideas? I know I did not buy a hyper gaming machine, but at least I expected my laptop to perform reasonably when compared with identical / similar specs...
Maybe worth removing all the HP "bloatware" that comes with your laptop mate:

You are running cloud gate, why the heck are you running cloud gate? Such a benchmark would be so weak and old it boils down to CPU single core performance. At least try Firestrike and Timespy.

I will give it a try - but I would be surprised if the performance hit from HP apps would be that substantial. I figured out that the issue seems to be more CPU related because I score particularly bad on physics tests...

Also, do you have an idea how it can be that the same laptop has different MHz for GPU in the benchmark (compare benchmark 1, 2 vs. 3)?

And, could it be that the GPU got damaged (these coloured artefacts on the black loadings screen looked extremely bad).
GPU Boost 3.0, Boost clock is always dynamic.
check if you are running in max performance mode too on nvidia and windows settings too

Hi - thanks for all, I will look into it. Here is a Timespy benchmark before installing the Windows update (right after reset):

Still below similar specs...

That is nothing to worry about, just a driver issue.

It's best to do a clean install of Windows if you are having issues with the Fall Creators update. You should always clean install new laptops anyway to get rid of all the bloatware which is basically malware/spyware.

Thanks a lot for all the kind Infos! On some of the benchmarks I am up to 40% off, especially physics. Can this really all be due to bloatware?

Also, sorry for the beginner question, but clean install is downloading a iso file and installing from there, correct? Also, do I need to first remove the current windows installation or will it be automatically overwritten? I don’t want to end up with 2 redundant OS on my device. Thanks a lot!

Ok so I see there’s a case for a clean install. So I’ll download the file to usb Stick and install from there.

Do you know if I’ll loae my windows 10 license code or where I can extract it for the reinstall? Do i need to remove the current is install or will it be automatically overwritten?

Your Windows 10 license is stored in BIOS, it will automatically activate itself again.

During the Windows installation you can wipe all partitions from the hardrive on the "Where do you want to install Windows?" screen.

Thanks again, you are great. Is there an easy way to back up the original, bloated version of windows as an install file in case i need the original set up?
Omega 2017年11月30日 6時35分
You don't need to original setup. All the drivers can be downloaded from the manufacturers website.

If you wan't to save your personal data don't wipe the disk during installation and Windows will ask if it should create a Windows.old.
