Controlling fans via motherboard or case fan controller

I am getting a game max moonstone case which has 4 fans and a fan controller that supports up to like 8 or 10 fans. I have 3 fans that I am also going to put into the case from my old build so should I plug them into the fan controller to or onto my motherboard? There are only 3 fan connectors on my motherboard

It's best to just connect everything to the motherboard. You can always use a fan splitter.

Could I put 3 of my old fans on the mobo and the 4 new ones on the fan controller in the case?

That's a terrible idea. It might work, but that's definitely not what your first instinct should be. Running anything through the motherboard is always playing with fire, the motherboard should be left alone as much as possible, because it houses your CPU, RAM and the motherboard itself in a single package, and it's not designed to be a fan controller.

You should always connect all fans to the motherboard and let the motherboard control them. If you want all your fans connected to a fan controller as a little gimmick sure go ahead but you will have to manually control all fans via either software or a button on the case.

depends on the fans tbh. Corsair HD or LL RGB Case-Fan Series cant be controlled via motherboard they either need a corsair RGB controller and/or for sofware controlling a Commander Pro/Mini and/or Lightning Node.
I'm not aware of any other exeptions tho.

The fans are controlled via a button on the PC case so I think they have to be in the fan controller?

OPs case costs less then a decent set of 4 RGB fans so you can assume that the included fans aren't all that great and probably run on a 3/4pin only with a default lighting patern which can not be changed.

i cant change it if i put them in the motherboard header?

If i plug in all the fans to the controller does that mean I cant use software to change them and only the button on the case?

I just did. The motherboard is not a power hub or a fan controller, the fan outlets are a convinience, nothing more.



As a little gimmick? No, connecting the fans to the motherboard, which isn't designed for that is the gimmick, the fan controller is a basic component that has no delicate electronics like the CPU that can be fried because you decided to wire way too much power through it.

Also, the mobo uses fan profiles to control the fan. They suck. They turn on randomly and then turn off randomly, and often can't be turned all the way off. Use a fan controller, fine tune the fan to be unnoticeable, sit back, enjoy the silence.

Does anyone know of any software that can be used with a cases fan controller?

It's not a software issue. It's hardware. The fans themselfs are most likely unable to switch to another RGB patern since it is chinabrand stuff.

I am perfectly fine with changing the rgb fans from a button but can I change their speed with software?
