Is it ok to upgrade a workstation?
I have an HP Z620 workstation and I want to install a new graphics card in it.
I was wondering if it will work with it and not explode in my face.

Computer = Computer.

Workstations are depending on what hardware they use quite often not suited for gaming at all.

My workstaion runs games really well but I still want to improve it.

What are the specs?

CPU: Intel XEON E5-2620
GRAPHICS CARD: AMD Firepro W5100 (want to upgrade to NVIDIA XLR8 GTX 1050 Ti)
RAM: 16GB
Memory: 1TB
Has a ton of fans inside and it's pretty quiet.
Gets the job done on a lot of my games.

Where did you get this machine? Since most of these parts still go for $500 or more online and it is not that old yet.

Especially that Firepro it's only 2 years old.

I would just sell it and buy a real gaming PC with a big i7 and a GTX 1070.

Sell it for $1000.

Are you sure those are that machines specs? Could you download and install CPU-z then validate and post the URL of the webpage that opens?

After doing some more research I conclude that this system is worth at least $400-$500 in parts.

This complete system I see online refurbished for $500-$1500.

you can put a 1050ti in that machine and do ok the problem with gaming on a workstation is they are designed with multicore processing in mind. so your 6-core + 6 thread sandybridge cpu has decent multitasking but the single thread performance is pretty poor @ 2-2.5ghz turbo it actually does better with newer games that support multiple cores/thread as opposed to older ones

youll find plenty of videos turning workstations into "gaming" pcs but one built from scratch designed for gaming will always outperform it.

I'm not sure where you are looking, but this kind of workstation build would be around $600-800 new, depending on the board, with today's prices. The price the OP paid ($200) is about what something like this would go for used. He might be able to sell it for a little more and get a profit, but it won't be that easy of a sale.
