Not as a "starter" chip, not as an upgrade. Why?

- Not as a "starter" chip. It's an "old" FX design which is far behind current gen AMD Ryzen chips, and was always behind Intel i7's. It dueled with Haswell Core i5's in multithreaded tasks, but was beaten in single-threaded tasks the moment it launched. Now, the FX-9590 gets stomped by the Ryzen R5 1400. The 9590 fares even worse against current-gen Intel products. The 9590 is an awful investment, even at $104.

- Not as an upgrade. The 9590 uses the exact same core design as the FX-8350 and FX-8370. Because the 9590 is highly binned, it can reach high frequencies - but these same frequencies are usually within reach of an overclocked 8350 or 8370. The performance difference between them is negligible.

And in both cases: it takes a motherboard with hefty vrms to run a 9590. For instance, if you're running an FX-6300 on an Asrock 970M- Pro3 motherboard, see the 9590, and decide you want the upgrade, guess what? The 4+1 vrm on that motherboard will burn like a cheap toaster before blowing up. Motherboards that can handle the FX-9590 - like the Asrock Extreme 9 or the Asus Sabertooth or Crossfire boards - cost $150 or more, if they can be found in stock. And if you're in the market for a new motherboard, why not just upgrade to Ryzen or Intel anyway?

Don't be tempted by the currently cheap price of the FX-9590. Don't buy it.

honestly vega isnt all that hot, im running a vega 64 right now while i finish my new build, as my 1080ti's are currently sitting on the side with waterblocks being fitted.

Huh, stomped? I wouldn't say that but you are right about much of the rest, 220w is quite the heater when you throw a gpu on top of it.

well i feel for you, this is my first amd / ati gpu ever, and it was got to be used in a minig rig as i got lucky and picked it up at the entry price of only 450 over the full 600, honestly, it makes very little sense to buy amd gpu's right now, nvidia simply has them beat on price and performance and i say that as an AMD share holder lol

Vega 56 will still make a nice upgrade to my current Polaris card - if the price drops to a reasonable level. Though with the GTX 1070Ti rumored to be launching soon, I'm expecting GTX 1070 prices to drop a little, making the Vega 56 an even harder sell.
