I have a GTX 1070 and I have the 27" 1440p 144Hz G-sync Asus monitor. It's fantastic.
I disagree. When you buy top equipment and you play the latest games, you're on 1440p.
"Most people" don't have GTX 1070s and play competitively.
Since you're on Nvidia you would want a G-Sync Monitor, as Freesync only works on AMD cards.
Not all games support Ultrawide, so I wouldn't bother with it.
You would probably want a 1080p/1440p 120hz+ monitor for your card.
G-sync and free sync are ways to allow the refresh rate of the monitor to drop down and match your fps. So if you can't push out 144 fps in a game, you won't get the tearing or the 'halving' of fps and input lag of vsync.
G-sync does it a lot better because the monitor actually has a chip in it. But it's only nvidia. Freesync is controlled by the card, which is still better than nothing though.
When you go with a 144Hz monitor, you can never go back to 60Hz, especially for shooters. It's just so smooth.
You also aren't maxing out games at high refresh at 1440p on a 1070, hell my 1080ti won't, sure it will for esport games, but so will a potato.
Depending just how competitive you are, a 240Hz 1080p gsync could be ideal if you are VERY serious about competitive play in e-sport games.
If you play more of a range of big new games and open world games a 1070 will struggle to max out 1440p AND make use of the high refresh of a 144 panel, but if it's e-sport games, a 1440 144 g sync is a glorious setup, just know you'll need to turn things down or have lower FPS in. Big open world games like pubg or wildlands.
I'm not like fully competitive but I like rainbow six siege and a higher refresh rate always helps
I can max out quite a few titles at 144fps depending on settings and what game. If by competitive this guy means Counterstrike or Overwatch then yeah he can hit 144fps easily.
1080p on 27 inches looks like absolute trash.
I still think a 1440p 144Hz solution is where you wanna be. And yeah, it will make you spoiled, but it's your screen. You bought it. It's not a rental. You'll be using it every day.
Actually you need at least a GTX 1080 to benefit of a high frame rate on a 1440p, it's much expensive...
I have a GTX 1070 and a 144Hz monitor and most games I play I'm over 100 fps. So OP is fine.
Gotta get modern, man. 1080p is last gen. 1440p is the standard now if you're playing new AAA titles.
It's a pity a 1070 won't get anywhere near 144 fps at ultra settings, even on a old game like GTA 5 lol. You would of been better getting a 1080p 144hz+ monitor, you would of got the max out of the monitor and got your money's worth.....Instead, you've wasted money on a 1440p 144hz monitor.
