Cleaning a pc?
whats the best way to do it? I only built it a few weeks ago and even thought he fans are still clean, a bit of dust has started to build up on top of the gpu (backplate not fan side). since static seems to be lauded as a pc's death warrant, I haven't used my duster cloth (or even a spectacle microfibre cloth either) due to fears of damaging it.

I've seen that the concensus is for compressed air, but its not exactly cheap considering it can only be used once. and would have thought it would only dislodge the duest as blow it all inside the case anyway. what good is that when vacuums aren't safe either?

Keep your pc off the floor and use canned air. You can get 4 packs (not 6 packs) of canned air for 12 bucks at walmart. Every couple of weeks, unplug everything and blow the crap out. It only takes a few minutes to clean your PC. Wiping off dust with a damp cloth or Swifer regulaly is a no-brainer (on the outside). Canned air inside, Duh.

which is quiet expensive and not so good as people think. Copressed Air can still have liquids in it and those are easily released when not holding it 100% in an upward position. a 60$ electric leaf blower or PC cleaner will do the job safer, faster and cheaper as you can easily sue them for 20 years and you could use them to clean the pc's for other and charge like companies 20$ for it.

compressed air cans are for the ppl that have no idea what they are using or doing imo.

Technicality alert!
Ya know what, I honestly don’t think small amounts of the propellant will hurt much as you’re supposed to use short bursts of the air anyway and at 2” away. But heck, I try to be 3” away from the point of contact. And as long as you make sure the “straw” is properly pushed back into the base (I routinely make sure it’s snug in place before use) before I use the air as the straw could be unintentionally become a powerful harpoon. Thus, likely damaging components. If you want to take an extra precaution you can tape the straw on.
Electric air blowers are obnoxious. And leaf blowers? Huh?

You don't need to clean your PC every couple week. My PC temp is the same before and after 10 months clean. I just did it because I'm changing the fan and it looks nicer with the glass panel that I rarely look at.

all professional doing it with a leaf blower even large companies like Newegg...

It depends on air quality and dust you have to fight where the PC is. Heck, I blow out my PC whenever I like. I vacuum regularly- Then I say to myself "WTF! Blow out the PC and wipe the thing off too!" I didn't build this rig to let it be an air filter!

I should add that I don't have a water cooled system, nor do I have air filter foam. It’s an entirely air cooled sysem – 2 intake fans and 3 exhaust fans. And I have an AMD FX 8320 with a wraith cooler. It all keeps cool, but maintenance is key! It’s a great rig, but it requires maintenance. I knew what I was building and I respect it’s responsibilities. It’s somewhat old school, but I’m happy with it.
Of course, everyone’s variables are different accordingly.

I don't use AIO or custom loop. Unless you have very crappy case or live somewhere that has sandstorm daily and open the windows I doubt you need to clean your PC every couple week. It doesn't make your PC any better, if your temp is still the same. The case should be relatively closed off, dust shouldn't go in that much.

Although my case does have filter in front, bottom and top that I occasionally take off and clean it. They aren't foam.

As BBB mentions, buy some filters, they are magnetic and cover the fan intake openings.

Thank you for your reply. I've actually worked on bettering the air quality of the living arrangement I currently occupy and what I've done works quite well! I'm happy. Everyone's input and replies make a difference and help everyone who reads these threads and beyond. And yes, I'll be looking into and implementing an air filter system for my rig!
@LiMpY Thanks for the tip!
Best wishes always!

Dry swiffer sheets are great for covering the inlet side of the case for filtering the incoming air. Catches a large portion of the dirt/dust.

I was referring to hand dusters like Swiffers, not dryer sheets. Swiffer doesn't make dryer sheets or filters.

I was referring to the dry Swiffer sheets as in not moist.

Don't waste your money on compressed air. There is literally zero reason to buy that over something like an electric duster. Cans of air take forever to clean out a pc and, cost $4 or so a pop, plus you gotta be careful with how you spray the air. Get something like this. I've already saved so much money and it gets the job done way better. Pushes out waaaay more dust than comp air.

And yeah it seems expensive but you can probably find cheaper. Regardless though, worth every penny.

Some general tips so you don't have to keep cleaning over and over:
-Get an air filter, stockings works fine too
-Have more intake than out. You're gonna generally need more powerful fans/pressure fans to compensate for the air filters

When I get old PCs donated, they are usually pretty caked with dust. I use a portable air compressor like this[www.homedepot.com] with an inline filter like this[www.homedepot.com]. Makes some impressive dust clouds in front of the garage for the really old ones. Only have to make sure you don't over spin the fans (toothpicks work well to prevent that). Much re-use out of it since I have light duty automotive air tools and makes quick work for air in tires.

Canned air works well too, the propellant evaporates relatively quick - just don't use it when the PC is powered up! I always have a can in the bathroom to clean out the electric shavers, also handy for cooling off anything hot-glued. If you use it enough to get really cold, make sure you have circulation in the room - the propellants are gases that are relatively harmless to components, but not your lungs! Considering a small handheld compressor like the metrovac, I do hate buying canned air and too lazy to bring stuff in the garage or backyard to hit it with the big compressor.

As mentioned, to filter intake fans used dryer sheets work very well and since they are throwaway zero cost. Just mount them between the case and fan then cut off the excess. Black stockings also work really well and have a really cool stealth look. Just be prepared to get strange looks or have a female get them lol.

I use a Coleman QuickPump 120V Pump $20
