Cleaning a pc?
whats the best way to do it? I only built it a few weeks ago and even thought he fans are still clean, a bit of dust has started to build up on top of the gpu (backplate not fan side). since static seems to be lauded as a pc's death warrant, I haven't used my duster cloth (or even a spectacle microfibre cloth either) due to fears of damaging it.

I've seen that the concensus is for compressed air, but its not exactly cheap considering it can only be used once. and would have thought it would only dislodge the duest as blow it all inside the case anyway. what good is that when vacuums aren't safe either?

Static isn't really a big issue to be honest these days, have the system powered down when cleaning it (unplug then hold power button to drain the capacitors), and you'll be fine with a brush, or go with the fancy option, I recently got a https://www.amazon.co.uk/ITDusters-CompuCleaner-Electric-Air-Duster/dp/B00S7CH6FK to avoid messing with air dusters ever again.
funny enough I was looking at that a while ago. might be a good investment since it can be re-used.
Yeah, mine turned up 2 days ago, need to clean out my old system soon for an upgrade along with having a mates truly filthy pc to fix made me decide to just buy it and get it over with, should save money and time in the long run.
does it remove dust it blows out aswell? what do you use for that?
A can of compressed air works best.

Open one side of the case. Use short, quick bursts in multiple directions. You will find the dust bunnies together against the edges and leaps out. Target heatsinks and fans mostly. You can then wipe the sides and vacuum the area around the pc case (if not outside).

To discharge static, after opening the pc case, hold onto a metal edge of it. Your body will discharge. Avoid using the vacuum (or hairdryer, etc) inside the case.

You clean it up with a duster, it's to get the dust out of the case.

so they're safe?
Best buy an electric air duster, I use Metrovac's. Bring it outside, open the side panel and blow away. You get what your money's worth, so the more expensive ones are powerful enough to clean heatsink and the like very easy.

You don't need to clean very often, like once a year is enough. I recently cleaned my after 10 months because I bought new fans so like wth why not clean it as well. Took out all the fans and CPU heatsink, clean them separately, the clean the rest, put fans and heatsink back on.
I use a blow dryer, only use one if you have a higher end one. Where you can adjust the force of the wind and the air temeprature. I use my blowdryer on low and cold air, and lightly blow the dust away after I physically clean the dust with a duster and q-tips
please dont use a hair dryer.

+1

hairdryers move electric static into the air possibly to short circuit a motherboard. WOuld never recommend it.
Keep your pc off the floor and use canned air. You can get 4 packs (not 6 packs) of canned air for 12 bucks at walmart. Every couple of weeks, unplug everything and blow the crap out. It only takes a few minutes to clean your PC. Wiping off dust with a damp cloth or Swifer regulaly is a no-brainer (on the outside). Canned air inside, Duh.
