AMD Radeon RX 480 Over-heating and freezing in 4k/2160p... fine in 1080p.
I bought this card with the intent of playing the latest games in 4k, not necessarily with full setting - but that would be nice.

The only game that works in 4k maxed out is Skyrim Special Edition - and it truly looks gorgeous with all the updated texture and this card does a fantastic job of rendering it.

Problem is when I try to play any newer game in 4k - after x amount of minutes (depends on how cranked the settings are -- i started moderately) the screen goes blank with some color and the sound, then the PC freezes and all I can do is re-boot.

Started using a GPU Temp. Monitor that graphs it over time. Not surprisingly the PC freezes right around when the temperature hits 80 degrees -- meaning that it takes this card too much heat to actually render at 2160p resolution continually.

The reason for the post is dual:
(1) anyone using the 480 with 4k and in what games? for me even fifa 18 freezes in 4k after 5 mins. Is anyone using the 480 in 4k for games or otherwise taxing work?
(2) what video card should I buy that plays the following games without a hitch in 4k/2160p with the settings [close to] maxed :
- Fallout 4
- XCOM 2
- Mafia 3
- Tom Clancy's Wilderness One
- Fifa 18
- Witcher 3
- Civilization 6

there are more, but I am sure if I can get some of these to work, then the card is the one that I need. I have a RX 460 as well, which is very similar but only had 4GB of DDR, whereas the 480 has 8GB.

Anyone can help me out?

Well sorry to say but for 4K currently you need a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti. Even the GTX 1080 which is a bit stronger then the Vega 64 is not up to the task anymore.
A GTX 1080 Ti even doesnt get in all games stable 60 fps at ultra settings. In Ghost recon Wildlands and Mass Effect Andromeda for example you sit around 40-50 fps max.

A RX 480 is to aged and outdated for the task. Even a RX 580 is not up to it.

PS: 480 is outdated for 4K not for 1080p befor someone msisunderstands this.

The RX 480 isn't a 4k card, but it still shouldn't be overheating like that. A friend of mine plays R6S in 4K with an HD4400 just fine...

What manufacturer? Asus? Sapphire? Gigabyte? MSI? You may need to mess with your fan settings in Wattman.

I would say to check the fan profile and increase their speed, while the card isn't really a good option for 4k given how much worse it will look with settings turned down Vs max at lower a lower resolution,it shouldn't be thermal throttling itself into crashing unless something is wrong with it.

RX480 is too :poop: for 4k.

The best gpu currently is a gtx1080ti and even that would not run 4k perfectly on max settings.
Do you have a very poor case fan situation?

Get more air passing the case and I guess you'll be fine. What case and what case fans?

Edit: isn't the rx480 close to what the "4k" consoles have. So one should be able to expect a similar performance then again the ps4 use checkerboard rendering and slightly lower render resolution in many cases. Anyway the post was about crashes and heat not the compute performance of the card.

AMD GPU's are not good for 4k gaming, heck, even the GTX 1080 is starting to have issues keeping games on ultra 60 fps 4k. If you want to play 4k for more than a year before needing to upgrade go for a 1080ti.

If you can play games at 4k and handle low FPS that's great but it still should not overheat. I'm thinking it's not overheating in 1080p because you have it locked at 60hz and not using 100% of the GPU where in 4k you would be.

You need to make sure your case is clean and use MSI afterburner to make a custom fan curve to keep the card cooler.

if you want the best FPS possible at 4k buy a 1080 ti.

80C is not overheating for GPU. Your CPU that is likely overheated. Simple, the GPU exhaust hot air toward your CPU area and if you don't have decent airflow/HSF your CPU could be overheated, even if 4K the stress is much more on GPU than CPU.

Hello the card is a GIGABYTE RX 480 and by lowering the Settings I can actually play in 4k for a while (also saving a lot)... however inevitably it overheats and freezes the PC. My case is open all the time -- would it be better to close it up and add fans somewhere?

Thanks for the comment about the consoles' vid cards vs the 480 as we have been pondering whether to get a really good 4k card, or to buy the xbox X.

Last comment - I have a tiny motherboard and the Video card is RIGHT NEXT to the CPU - however the CPU does not over-heat -- I had that problem before and moved past it. My CPU has a rather large fan and doesn't go over 40-50 degrees much. However I will keep this mind, because sometimes a wrong assumption can prevent from seeing the solution.

As long as the card will let me play games in 4k comfortably, without any crashes or overheat then I will gladly fork out whatever $$ for the 1080 ti.

The fact that Microsoft made all their Apps in the Windows Store to be only be able to be used in Windows 10, that and all the new games are Win10 only, as much as this turd stinks I think I have to upgrade to Win10 with or without my opinion mattering.

Any other cards I can look at?

PS: the reason i am rather sure that it's the card overheating is that it used to be in my other PC with the same problem. In that PC I had to buy a large CPU fan that makes sure my cpu is rarely hotter than 30 degrees, however the GPU heats up using any kind of 4k game (except Skyrim SE) and it freezes the PC after the screen turns a solid color.

GPUs should never overheat based around Screen Res or in-game settings, that doesn't make any sense. Your Case cooling is lacking and you have Fan Curve on Stock; just get better Case Airflow and adjust your GPU's fan curve.

1. undervolt in wattman
2. increase fan speed
3. lower target temperature

you may have to drop down to 17.7.1 drivers to keep saved voltage settings.

It could simply means the GPU is dying under stress. 80C is nowhere near overheat, it may near THROTTLE TEMP, which is still a long way to overheat.

If GPU is dying, RMA it.

some interesting responses, everyone.... personally i thought playing a 4k game for 5-15 mins should not be enough to over-heat the card and that 80 seemed a bit low.... i have replaced the stock fan with a better one, but the PC case is constantly open. 1080p with everything cranked to the max lets me play all those games no problem.
Big Boom Boom 2017 年 11 月 5 日 下午 11:55
Not under any circumstances should a GPU be overheating. It would throttle itself long before that. Unless you purposely make it overheat.

This was very tiring explaining that to the people on that thread in Total War Warhammer II because they think there's a "rogue code" in the game that cause their system to overheat. :steamfacepalm: You would think GPU maker that ship 20m+ cards a year would know better.

You can try running a stress test like Firestrike/Timespy/Superposition stress test if you have the paid version. I think the card MAY be in fact faulty, you can try to RMA it. It's not heat however.

For most people having the card throttling because of heat would be "have overheated" for them. They don't mean it broke just that it got to hot for running at full power.
