If you want headset I say check out Logitech G430, low price decent surround sound, with decent mic for around $40 - $80.
choose your surround:
Roccat Juke for surround[www.amazon.com] $15
OR
Razer Surround[www.razerzone.com] free software
decent budget headset:
Samson SR850[www.amazon.com] $39
decent mic:
Modmic 4[www.bhphotovideo.com] $43
Not to shabby for under $100, or under $85 with software surround
Most people here will tell you to get headphones and a mic separate. While I'm sure if that's something you have the space/money for it's a better solution, it's not realistic for me.
I do not like the gamer black/red color theme or the position of the inline audio controls on the cord. And people also complain about the metal suspension band making noise when you touch it, but I usually only touch the band when I'm putting them on or adjusting the placement of the headphones.
Mine cost me $80 on sale, and at that price, I think they are a good buy. If you can only find it at the full retail $120 price, I would consider a pair of Sennheiser/Audio Technica/etc. $120 headphones with a mic instead as the sound quality will be better.
I will have to take a look at these. Also what about the Corsair Voyagers those caught my eye recently.
IMO you're better off with quality headphones from a non-gaming brand and just a decent standalone mic. Usually the cost is comparable to anything that's marketed specifically for gaming, because they mark all those up beyond what they're actually worth.
I used to always prefer headsets on my gaming machine but when my last headset broke I just picked up a $15 clip mic and stuck it to the AudioTechnicas that I use for studio work. The sound quality on both fronts is so much better that I'm never going back.
^ this a thousand times over.
It amazes me how the gaming community is so dead set on crappy headsets that have bad sound. Sound is more immersive than anything else you can do to your system including a high resolution, high refresh rate monitor.
Get a good pair of studio stereo headphones. If the headphones market them as surround sound then stay away from them because they are junk. Most gaming peripheral companies make crappy headsets/headphones.
Look at brands like Sony, philips, sennheiser(personal favorite), audiotechnica, and others. Stay away from beats, Bose, Logitech, skull candy, razer, or any other gaming company.
Please stop wasting money on crap sound!
Don't buy surround sound headphones!
Avoid "surround sound" headsets.
Buy proper headphones and a mic, not a cheap toy.
I would recommend you this https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0748K7JW6/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1511334957&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=corsair+void+rgb+7+1+dolby&dpPl=1&dpID=41fSgymW2hL&ref=plSrch.
I have this headset but without the "PRO" and I would tell you that this headset is excellent for gaming with a Dolby 7.1 and more things included.
This is new version of Corsair of VoiD.
I hope it can help.
If you want to have good surrond get good studio Stereo headsets. They give you a better emulated surrond then a true surrond headset.
one of the best examples is the Tritton Pro+ which is a true 5.1 Headset and gets the surrond by using 4 cheap bad quality speakers compared to stereos good 1 speaker at one side. And even tho you have true surrond your sound quality and tracking ability is far lower as the sound quality is far worse.
It is best to get good quality stereo headsets than those "gamer" and "surround" ones.
Your ears will thank you many many times.
