Reason being, when you're running a VR game you're having to render every frame twice. That puts a lot of load on the GPU. Having a high framerate is also important, since low framerates can cause motion sickness.
Take a look at the GTX1070Ti and GTX1080, but also bear in mind that Nvidia has a completely new product line coming next year.
It'll run, but it won't run smoothly and that can be a serious issue in VR. Choppy framerate usually equal puke.
I would just try it with what you have now and see how you go. If the occasional frame-rate losses aren't a problem, stick with what you have. If you find yourself feeling ill, consider upgrading the GPU.
