PC restarts during games and when running Unigine but all temps are fine
Hi, hoping someone can help out with this. It randomly started a couple of months ago, PC would shut down mid-game and restart. Was only happening occasionally to begin with but in the last month it has been happening more and more often and getting worse and worse.

Basically it shuts down during a game (could be 10 mins in, could be an hour in) and went through a phase where it would not load Windows afterwards; it would get to the loading screen, shut down and restart and just keep doing this over and over. One day last week and on Sunday night it wouldn't load Windows at all but would be perfectly stable in BIOS and was also fine when it eventually got itself into Safe Mode. Sometimes it would eventually get into Windows and then just shut down.

Today it started fine, no restarts, but when I tried to play some games later on it crashed every single time.

I've been monitoring CPU and GPU temps and they are are fine so definitely not overheating.

It had previously been fine in Furmark but today I downloaded and ran Unigine Heaven and it has shut down and restarted every single time I've run it. First time it worked for a full sequence of scenes and then shut down; the second time it ran for about 20 seconds and then managed about 5 seconds the third time.

From what I've read (and I feel like I've ready every forum thread going about this sort of problem) it sounds like the PSU is the most likely culprit, as it can't handle the extra load that the GPU demands when it's working hard, but I wanted to see what you guys thought. Thanks in advance!

Yeah you are probably right. Sounds indeed like the PSU is the issue.

Thanks :)

Just ran the OCCT PSU test and it crashed almost instantly. I had been wondering if maybe it was a GPU driver problem because of the problems with getting Windows to boot, but I feel like these stress tests have pretty much confirmed it's the PSU. I do have an old GPU so I might test that to try and rule out it being the gfx card, but I don't see how a gfx card could cause a system to shut down?

Since we both agree the PSU is probably the issue it's probably best to not use the machine anymore until you have replaced it. You don't want to risk the PSU killing your parts when it goes boom.

psu is a good possibility. do you have anything overclocked? gpu, cpu, or ram?

No, all stock and boring! GPU is a GTX 960 OC Edition so I tried underclocking it via MSi Afterburner and ran Unigine and it still shut down. Ram was running an XMP profile but I disabled that in Bios just in case it was contributing in some way. I have not touched the CPU at all.

I built the PC about 7 years ago so that's how old all the components are, aside from the GPU, which I bought about 2 or 3 years ago.

Yeah that's pretty sensible thinking :)

XMP should always be enabled. Not having XMP enabled could result in your system running unstable although it is rare.

Ah ok, thanks, will turn it back on in Bios.

It's a Cooler Master GX 550W, this one: http://www.coolermaster.com/powersupply/gx-series/gx-550w/
