Any downsides to a 1920x1200 monitor?
I’ve always gone with standard 1080p for my monitors but I’m thinking about buying something different for a change. Will the ratio cause any compatibility issues with games/ apps at all?

The bigger/wider the monitor gets the more spaced out the pixels will be. The more pixels, the better the image, or image will look the same but at a bigger scale on a larger screen.

I'd stick to 16:9 or 21:9

16:10 (1920x1200) was something more commonly used by Pro users, like for PhotoShop, since when IPS were fairly a new thing, they were more common to use 16:10; overall it allowed such users to have slightly more on-screen at any given time.

Many Games do not support it, so no I wouldn't use it for that purpose.

I'm still using a 1920x1200 IPS Dell monitor. I like the additional vertical space and have never run into a problem with any game supporting it.

I haven't used 16:10 for a while, but my younger brother has been sporting my old 22" 1680x1050 for the past year or more and he hasn't had any issues with games not working with that ratio.

Heck of a monitor too, I used it for 7-8 years (I think I purchased it Dec of 2007 or Jan of 2008 - Samsung 226CW). I picked it up before 1920x1080 was becoming the standard. I had to replace the capacitors on the powerboard due to some of them bulging horribly and causing flickering and loss of image at times. After they were replaced, she worked like the day I got her. My brother loves it, a free upgrade from his 19" 1440x900 monitor he used for a long, long time.

16:9 was appareantly easier to produce, so it won over 16:10. But is still used for graphics designers and so far all major games I have seen supported 16:10 with no issues.

As a pro designer, I produced wallpapers for 16:10 even in this year. Unfortunately the downside is the complete lack of 4K support for 16:10, there are only very few monitors who had the experimental 3840x2400.

I don't see any reason why you shouldn't go for it. It will stay supported for the half decade at least and after that you will probably go for a new screen anyways.

I always used 1200p displays until getting 1440. Like already stated there are no issues, besides some very low budget games may not support it. Switching to 1080 in that case shows no noticeable scaling issues commonly associated with running a lcd out of native.

My monitor is a Toshiba 40L52000U TV set...and I have zero problems playing games at 1080p so long as my DPI is 96. I can get my TV to use 1440p and 2160p (2304p) as well.

But aside from that, not really. You'll have small black bars on the top and bottom if you set the resolution to 1920x1080. That being said it's highly subjective to the game's you want to play. Screen change is a factor that can affect the 16:10 aspect ratio that 1920x1200 resolution brings.

I’m more of a triple a and popular indie game guy anyway so I think support shouldn’t be too much of an issue. If a game didn’t support it, would everything just be stretched up?

1080p is still the norm. I am also still at 1080p.

So unless you have a rig that is massively overkill for 1080p (GTX 1080 and up) there is no reason not to game at 1080p.

I got a 1070...and it’s kinda overkill for 1080p. Not that 1200p makes THAT much of a graphical impact. I’m only getting this monitor because it looks appealing and 1080p is just a bit low for a 24” monitor

Nah...ithat depends on how you have your video card set to handle that situation really. You can set NVIDIA's dis[play settings in the control panel to GPU control and tick the button that says " Preserve Aspect Ratio" and you should be ok.

That would just put black bars on top and underneath right? To keep it at 16:9?

One more thing...should I even go for a dell ultrasharp u2415? It seems like a really good monitor for the price

Yeah but you are also losing how far left and right you can see. 1920x1200 is a 16x10 ratio...the closer those ratio numbers are togther the more square-like the shape becomes. 4x3 for instance is alomost a perfect square. If oyu want a 16x9 resolution at 1200p, you will have to make a change to the horizontal resolution so in stead of 1920x1080...you will have to use 2133x1200.

Here is a useful website to help calculate aspect ratio:

Here is a useful article on how games usually display aspect ratios:

A 1070 is ok for both 1080p and 1440p.

That is really totally up to you because a 16x10 monitor, though narower, has a smaller fottprint in width than a monitor with 16x9 aspect ratio. If you want a 16x10 monitor...you probably cannot go wrong with that one.
