16:10 (1920x1200) was something more commonly used by Pro users, like for PhotoShop, since when IPS were fairly a new thing, they were more common to use 16:10; overall it allowed such users to have slightly more on-screen at any given time.
Many Games do not support it, so no I wouldn't use it for that purpose.
I haven't used 16:10 for a while, but my younger brother has been sporting my old 22" 1680x1050 for the past year or more and he hasn't had any issues with games not working with that ratio.
Heck of a monitor too, I used it for 7-8 years (I think I purchased it Dec of 2007 or Jan of 2008 - Samsung 226CW). I picked it up before 1920x1080 was becoming the standard. I had to replace the capacitors on the powerboard due to some of them bulging horribly and causing flickering and loss of image at times. After they were replaced, she worked like the day I got her. My brother loves it, a free upgrade from his 19" 1440x900 monitor he used for a long, long time.
As a pro designer, I produced wallpapers for 16:10 even in this year. Unfortunately the downside is the complete lack of 4K support for 16:10, there are only very few monitors who had the experimental 3840x2400.
I don't see any reason why you shouldn't go for it. It will stay supported for the half decade at least and after that you will probably go for a new screen anyways.
But aside from that, not really. You'll have small black bars on the top and bottom if you set the resolution to 1920x1080. That being said it's highly subjective to the game's you want to play. Screen change is a factor that can affect the 16:10 aspect ratio that 1920x1200 resolution brings.

So unless you have a rig that is massively overkill for 1080p (GTX 1080 and up) there is no reason not to game at 1080p.
