Stick to 1080p and you can look into high refresh much cheaper, the upcoming 1070ti would be an great choice, with near 1080 performance at around a £100 discount.
Nvidia had all but sad they have no need to rush Volta, they have no real competition as it is, however, I would expect to see something around march regardless.
If you keep your screen size to 24 inch 1080p looks fine, when you go to 27, it becomes a bit to low.
Yes you are saving $100 in your way. I admit.
But there is no guarantee that all next gen GPUs will deliver 2x performance boost, like the
Pascal did. Infact not even pascal able gave that-
Last Gen $700 GTX 980 Ti = current $399 GTX 1070.
Not Gtx 1060.
So if you buy a $300 mid level GPU after 2 years, it won't give you GTX 1080 Ti like performance, may be far lesser than that. but you are still spending 300+300= $600 in 4 years.
Math.
Volta seems to do even a higher jump then pascal btw. when they keep up on the leaks.
PS: A good 1080 Ti cost 900$ upwards... trice the cost of a the midrange GPU
Head to the PC part picker, most of the people is buying GTX 1080 Ti for $700-$750, like the following MSI ones-
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814137111&ignorebbr=1&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-PCPartPicker,%20LLC-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=
if any special model is selling for $900, is that even worth mentioning...?? (Logic..??)
also and you got the wrong information about Volta, Volta's top GPU (V100) has 5100 Cuda Cores Vs GTx 1080 Ti's 3584 Cuda cores. Yes you can add some more performance for Volta's New HBM2 Memory. But no way it's Double to Pascal's performance. Pascal is the Greatest Jump in Nvidia History.
Does it matter Ti is $730 or $799...?? Does it matter the New GTX 1070's Driver gives 5-7% performance boost or not...??
yes..., we can fight all day long this way, but i'm sure you are smart enough to got the massage that- ''Buying the Best GPU / CPU you can afford''. is not a bad idea, at all.....,
That was my Point.
That card, while a very good PCB (it's a gaming X PCB) has the cooler from a 1060 and throttles like mad, it's basically a bare bones 1080ti where you are meant to remove the cooler and fit a waterblocks.
The extra cash for better coolers is really worth it as the 10 series and the 1080ti especially is really affected by temps.
As for the Volta chip with 5k cuda cores I saw that today myself +haven't read into it yet) , not sure if well be getting that for the consumer market or if that's going to be more for the ultra high end professional kit, but, if we do, I am glad I am already saving to replace my 1080ti's lol
there are countless models of GTX 1080 ti at $699-$749 price range, if you don't like one, get another. No need to pay Premium.-

I just found it funny you suggested the worst 1080ti possible to be ran at stock. Either way, breaking your bank / budget to get a n overkill GPU today in the hopes it keeps up for years to come, is kind of daft.
You should buy what suits your needs today really and at most hope for a couple of years, if you get more, that's a bonus.
A GPU won't just become bad, just because a "Monk" thinks that way.
If you found something "funny", it's your personal issue. No one can do anything about it.
and buying a 1080ti to last you multiple generations when all you need is a 1060 is a bad idea.
Look, I am not going back to square 1 all over again. If you get gtx 1060, you are still end up spending $600- $700 in 4 years, that's equal to 1 time spending of Gtx 1080ti. Except, here you are getting the best performance all the way, from start to end. at the same amout of money. Without the Hassel of changing hardware.
If you have $300, fine buy Gtx 1060.
but if you can afford a Gtx 1080 Ti, you should buy that. Unless you you are buying a new PC just for using first 2 years.
Since DKdeath is happy with the GTX680 for now it's probably best to wait for official 1070ti game benches reviews to release this coming Thursday.
DKdeath really needs to nail down what monitor res he'll be using too, I just don't see the GTX1060 being a long term solution even at 1080p ( I have both the mid range Rx 580 and GTX1060). With the Rx 580 8GB GRW I get playable FPS at 1080p with majority settings at very high, however the GTX1070/ti would still be a better long term solution even for 1080p.
Or limp through with GTX680 and target an upcoming Volta GTX2070 or whatever they might be called at the time but with latest amd vega release nvidia is in no rush to push volta release that's what the whole GTX 1070 ti is about.
wait for black friday
