yeah there is another way as well.
But that was not what i wanted to know.
What i want to know is. do i get a retail win 10 with my retail win 7 key?
I'm not willing to give a up a retail key for a oem key.
MS calls it a Digitial Entitlement license. Which means the device you upgrade to will activate without needing to enter a key during (re)install provided you link your MS account and you do not upgrade/replace the motherboard.
Your Win7 retail key DOES NOT get converted to a Win10 retail either!!! It remains a Win7 key, but it can be used to activate Win10 but IS NOT required.
Just install Win10 and enter your Win7 key, done.
You can have that license active as many times as you wish; sure there are limits but most consumers would never exceed this limit.
If there has this 3 install limit, which I've heard from folks before, not sure where they get that info, cause it is 100% BS. If it were true how come I can install Windows OS, same key, on like 10 drives, they've all been activated separately; no issues. Done this for many years, no problems.
Yes you will lost your OS being "Retail" so what; none of that matters.
Plus you can re-use your Win7 OS freely even after putting Win10 on your machine.
However, OP can put Win10 on the machine he had Win7 on. Then go and re-use that Win7 on another machine if he/she wants to.
"Free upgrade for 1 year" was a marketing gimmick; nothing more. The fact is, Win10 has remained this way, it has not changed in that regard.
