Amd vs intel for gaming.
I have always had an i7 but I am thinking of building a tower and I hear the AMD fx7th gen is pretty decent even though the heat output is a bit much. Thoughts on if I should run AMD or Intel?

Intel i5 - i7 for gaming, AMD Ryzen for heavy multicore tasks like rendering. Do not buy FX, they're a complete waste of money.
Can you name another CPU for 50 bucks? Cause 100 for a ryzen and then what a good mobo to OC at least another 100? If the FX is getting me by for now?

Like I said what if yyou cant afford Ryzen or Intel?

In that situation it's take it, or leave it.

But if he/she able to afford, or save up for it, then why delay one self, if he/she can hold onto that cash a little longer to get the next gen flagship. But it ultimately comes down to what OP wants to do.

Also the fact he said he has an I7 which really make me question why he even wants to downgrade, unless he using the 1st gen i7 860, 870, or 880, which isn't much of an upgrade at all really.

There is no point debating any of this non-sense; all the data is there that says you are wrong when it comes to gaming performance. It's that simple really.

Overall, this is not a debate. The OP is looking for which CPU he/she should lean towards; unless it is Ryzen for something of an AMD choice, then the only other option is Intel... simple as that really.

Don't buy outdated stuff; it's dead.
What if you cant afford a ryzen? But if you want to talk data and you would last I expect to argue non sense with me on heres data

Sure they hold thier own, https://www.techspot.com/review/1173-doom-benchmarks/page5.html

Doesnt change the fact the game is using more threads and if it werent for 8 cores they would perform like the FX 4300 which still gets way over 60 fps maxed.

That's just one example; that's not a reason to buy something.

DOOM actually became well optimized over time; most games, single threaded performance is all that counts.

Look at the data that shows FX-8370, 6th Gen i3, Ryzen 1200/1300X are all roughly same exact performance in Gaming.

But also look at things from another perspective, if you buy an FX-8, well you're buying something that already the max for that Socket/Chipset; there won't be anything to upgrade to. If you base the system around AMD AM4 or Intel LGA-1151; you'll have a beefier CPU you can upgrade to down the road if needed.

This alone makes going AMD FM2+ or AM3+ a huge mistake. Regardless of how cheap those might be.

2 core of a pentium or i3 a FX 8 core will and especially OCed give better performance if the game can use them. I dont see what there is too debate. In Doom alone an FX 4300 performs similar in budget to those cpus, the 6 and 8 core AMDs are much better
Overclocked or not, FX still has Pentium performance level. i3 at most, if you say about FX-9370/9590. Despite FX-9590 has twivce more cores than Pentium.

FX-9 are good, however still not worth it; since no cheap Motherboard could ever run those.
And they eat 2-4x as much power as modern CPUs that are better performance. You'd save in the long run by buying a more expensive CPU that wont impact your power bills as much.

even if your i7 is a few years old it's still going to be very good for gaming. unless you need more cores for streaming and editing videos, it wouldn't be worth it to upgrade yet.

Best bet would be to share all current specs; then we could better determine if an upgrade would even be worth it, depending on what all you wish to do with it, or of what areas you hope to see improvements in.

I bet, OP just want to start another vs thread and nothing more. His question itself looks very strange.

I'm surprised and slightly disappointed that it took 29 replies for somebody to notice that.

Already had this argument with vady, if you want to think single thread like over a decade ago be my guest

I think we both know games have been using more then 4 cores for years and now most will especially source2, UT 4 or ID 6 engine based

And this is not even about amd intel, this is about what games are multithreading, like stated motha I dont know what your problem is or that attitude is from I noticed you deleted me yesterday even before this, but dont get smart, your stopping to vadys level

This is about devs taking advantage of more cores and all major devs are now doing it before it was too complicated they claim all new AAA titles use more then 4 cores dont deny it and quite a few have been for years

I'm not switching. I am thinking of building a tower and was told ryzen and the 7th gen FX could keep up with an i7. And since I am a student the price looked nice. But obviously an i7 is king.

Wait, you actually want to swap from Intel to FX?

You serious?

If you're going AMD, go Ryzen. Just know that current Intel's i7-7700k is the king of gaming right now.
