Fan replacement issue - MSI GE72 2QE Apache
Hi everyone,

I have had my MSI GE72 2QE Apache for roughly 2 years now. Unfortunately the CPU fan started buzzing and rattling quite loudly and after some fiddling around and trying to fix it my boyfriend and I decided it was better to replace it. It all went smoothly and the new fan runs but for some reason the screen isn't working now. Completely black.

Some people say to upgrade bios (not sure how to do that), some people say to completely drain the battery and we have also read something about replacing RAM but just wanting to see if anyone else has an opinion on what has happened? We aren't tech experts but I am pretty certain that it was installed correctly - there was no glue needed or anything so it was pretty straight forward. That being said it is also likely that we have really screwed up... haha.

I really appreciate any help in advance!

Kath

PS: Hope it is okay to post this topic in this forum...

Re-check the screen cable that connects to the board; those are very sensitive if not sitting/locked down properly. Re-check any cable connection that clips into place, since they must lock in correctly or they will not align if out just a little bit.

Thanks Bad_Motha - will look into that again and make sure all cables are attached properly. Much appreciated.

Hi all -

I have checked cables and everything seems to be where it should be. Still at a loss as to what to do now. I have been chatting with someone on the MSI board which I will attach here. Will show you were I am at.

Summary:
- Cables in tact
- Computer running smoothly
- CPU running between 5%-12%/GPU 0%
- Works when connected to external monitor (which I have been using to see how everything is running) and does detect that 2 screens are present.

Not sure what to do next.

Thanks guys,

Kath

Probably the Primary Display Cable, most likely that original display still works, but it could be the actual cable. With those cables, there are a ton of pins on them, so if it get pulled hard or at an angle when removed or re-installed, you can smash something, they are easy to kill to be honest, if not careful.

Best bet would be have a shop look at it and try changing out the display wire harness.

I was trying to work out which of the cables was linked to the display but having looked at it again as well as inserting/removing the fans again I don't think that we damaged anything. Unless it is really close to the either the GPU and CPU fans (they are attached to each other via a copper rod thing). We were very meticulous and gentle - the only thing we managed to knock out was the very tiny audio cables which were easy enough to place back in.

Its definitely a good idea to go to a comp store but I just want to exhaust all options first to save money (stupid probably but worth a shot)

Thanks!

Bad_motha -

I was just wondering whether it is important to reapply thermal paste and what effect it would have on the display if not applied. I just realised (through another video) that thermal paste was applied in the centre to hold both fans in place. Would it make a difference that we didn't re-apply?

Unless you remove the heatsink + heatpipes; these are under tension and screwed down; there there is nothing regarding that to be done. The is by itself, just the fan and a wire...

Unless the laptop has cooling issues there is no reason to mess with the thermal paste at all.
And it's not going to overheat seconds after a cool-boot from room temp; it would take some time, if there was an issue of that sort.

You can see the system fully working normally via a secondary display, correct?

All I could suggest, other then having a good tech go hands on with it, is strip down the entire laptop, completely, and then put it back together... Otherwise there is no other way to be sure really.

Laptops usually have graphics integrated into the CPU, i.e. an APU. Laptops run so hot that often solder points become broken bc the shrink/expand, become soft, etc. If you did not properly install the heat sink to a T, you may have caused it to overheat and break a connection which is not repairable without a special board repair station/ reflow station. Ive worked on laptops for over a decade and will never buy another thanks to the simple fact that if one part goes, the whole thing is a loss.

Okay - interesting because some were suggesting that it was very important - I am assuming that they don't know how it screws down like you do. My partner also said that it wasn't a huge deal considering the way it is screwed tightly into place.

And yes when I use a secondary display everything functions perfectly. No issues whatsoever and when I use the fan boost both fans work well.

Yeh I am getting to that point where I think bringing it to a shop is my only option. Have to just give in.

Thanks for all the help man.

Yea let a good tech look at it. If it turns out its the wire harness for the display, those are cheap and fairly easy to replace yourself. If it's the actual Display, have MSI replace that under warranty.

Hey Master0fBlunt,

Yeh I have always been someone to use a tower instead (I have one at home that I think I will use instead in the case this doesn't come right) and need to upgrade the inside.

But I have noticed that the MSI heated up to an uncomfortable point when playing games. I love the convenience of being able to play anywhere I choose but its a big price to pay for all the issues. It was such a good laptop too :( Played most games with no worries at all. Bummer.

The only thing I can say which you may have seen above is that the layout of the CPU/GPU and heat sink was pretty basic. I know we are amateurs but it was pretty much just unscrew and then screw back - I can't imagine that we had done anything serious in that time we were very delicate. But as you say it has to be done to a T and perhaps we didn't.

You don't suppose maybe the laptop needs some sort of update to accept the new CPU or a program or something? I keep hearing the word BIOS but not sure if that applies to my situation.

I just feel like with some comp stores they can rip you off when the problem is quite simple.

Thanks for your advice.

Hopefully we can find someone genuine (who doesn't quote us $100's for a $25 job). I am out of warranty now so its probably going to have to be something local rather than sending it to another state.

Unless the Laptop exceeding like 90-95*C then heat is a non issue. This is just what will normally occur while under heavy loads; like with Gaming.

How is it out of warranty? That should be 3 years.

So far I remember, msi has 1 yr.

+ "and extend 2nd year warranty is optional and available now."
