VR HDMI hookup question *urgent reply please*
I'd like to borrow from the knowledge of this forum for this, as I find this group of people here to have been of great aid in the past......

This is pretty much a VR setup question, although it may be possible for those with general hardware knowledge to answer it as well (although from my understanding of hardware it "should" work)

Essentially have to know if it is possible to run a VR headset dirrectly to the graphics card HDMI and have the monitor run off the motherboard HDMI/VGA. Not sure if any baring on this but the GFX card is a Nvidia GTX1070, and the VR headsets can be either Rift or Vive.

I know there are some stupid work arounds for people running multiple monitors + VR headset using peripherals/splitters to see the same thing as whats being input into the headset. This is not what I am asking about....I am asking if directly plugging the monitor into the motherboard directly for all your standard computing and running the VR from the graphics card is possible....that and if this is the case....can you easily flip to the GPU for hdmi output for computer gaming in standard (non-VR format)

If anyone can physically try this or test run it I would be very grateful....just really need an answer on this asap.

As always thank you.

Connect both the monitor and the VR headset to the GPU.

Get a DP to HDMI adapter for the monitor if your monitor does not support DP or DVI.

Do not use display adapters with the VR headset or the headset will not work.

But the GPU only has one HDMI out port....

...this is kind of where the issue lies....unless I'm missing something....

Everything has to be connected to the GPU. Get a adapter for the monitor.

I might have found a work around. Someone on the Reddit forums suggest to someone with the same issue as you to plug the VR headset in and use a remote desktop app on your phone to control the PC and launch your games.

So basically long and short of it is I have to plug through the GPU HDMI for both monitor and VR outputs?

So what I suggested prior doesn't work? I know there are a couple work arounds given single HDMI....or is someone is more familiar with the GTX1070 than I am....what other options do I have for running the video off of it for either the VR or the monitor....so that one can be HDMI and the other >>>>????

I'll be honest not 100% sure what these other ports on it are lol.
Only one device can be connected via HDMI at once since your GPu only has one HDMI port.

If your monitor supports Displayport or DVI connect it via one of those ports.

Nope you can not use both the Intel HD and the GPU at the same time.

If you have a smarthphone you could use Chrome remote desktop or a similair app to control your PC. That way you don't need a monitor.

I use HDMI for VR headset and dvi from GPU to HDMI to monitor. So I bought the cable like that, DVI -D to HDMI. My monitor has 2 HDMI and one VGA. So not using VGA. There's all sorts of cables these days. The monitor picked the signal right up, no need to even tell him the source.

@ Omega. Well until I got that cable I used VR to gpu HDMI and HDMI from motherboard to monitor. It worked. Thing is I want to play games on monitor as well so didn't want unplug vr headset all the time out for that. But until I got that cable I was using the mobo hdmi just to see stuff on my monitor. Hope that makes sense.

Why make this so hard? Buy a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter to your HDMI Monitor can connect to the GPU while you use HDMI for your VR. Very simple.
In retrospect I could have done that but this cable was cheap and fits my needs perfectly. OP has choices, hope he figured it out.
Yea never use the Motherboard outputs; period. In fact, disable that useless GPU.

Hopefully you guys can still be available to reply. So the GTX 1070 has display port out? What kind of monitor do you need for that....so I don't have to buy a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ dongle to change it to HDMI....would be nice but I'd rather just drop the bit of extra cash on cheap monitor if thats the case than get a dongle

Displayport is only found on expensive monitors with a high resolution and refresh rate.

Just buy a adapter: https://www.amazon.com/DisplayPort-Adapter-Benfei-Converter-Gold-Plated/dp/B017Q8ZVWK/

Hmm but my GFX card definitely has display port out?>? 1070GTX?

I'm sorry but I know of it....I just have never ever used it.

I can actually get a trash monitor with display port if need be...and basically run it off the HDMI when I am not using the VR with my other monitor....

But all I want to verify is that

Also PS I love you for replying so much you are a trooper

SO IT DOES WORK?

:O

I can do it

I have no problem flipping cables everytime I unplug the VR headset, I've got a couple rigs....most of which are trash

The problems is that trash monitors don't have displayport. The cheapest DP monitors are $130 +/-.

Just get the adapter it's only $10. Connect the adapter to your GPU and connect your monitor to the adapter.

It doesn't work. Usually the I-GPU is disabled when a GPU is installed.

And even if it does work you could run it to issues since the monitor will be running from the I-GPU.

I'm looking at the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ thing, labels say nothing, I just see the HDMI and 3 sockets out for things that look like this [______\ (not a straight edge more like...

Is that the display port...if not wtf is that?

Yes your 1070 has a DP port. Basically all GPUs nowadays have one.
