Also don't buy any used gpu.
And scratch the SLI joke.. it's not worth the money for gaming. Buy instead 1 powerfull gpu if u need the power.
But also depends on your current setup.
The 980 ti is a little bit faster than 980 it isnt the money worth.
Ist a big problem
Thats why he wants to buy it.
£80 difference between 1070 and 980 to.
GTX 1070 or GTX 1080Ti are better options. Go for those GPU's.
980 Ti on the other hand is still a great card, but for the same price a 1070 will run just as fast, with less power consumption, which usually equals a cooler and more silent card.
GTX 1060 = Slightly faster than the GTX 980 and 3x performance in VR (Virtual Reality).
GTX 1070 = GTX 980 Ti / Titan X performance levels
GTX 1080 = 2x GTX 980 SLI performance levels
If you can get a cheap GTX 980 for 2nd hand, then go for it. They are still beasts of a gaming card. Ti would be roughly 30% performance increase over that. Else consider the GTX 10xx series (GTX 1070 would replace the GTX 980 Ti, for example, giving better performance for less power draw, later technology and support) or if you are considering VR.
All would be optimal at 1440p resolutions with very high to ultra settings.
Bottom line:
GTX 980 Ti ($100 difference to GTX 980) but GTX 1070 ($80 difference but equal or greater performance)...
Therefore GTX 1070 is the best pick.
