i5 6600 w/ DDR3 RAM
Hello,
I just bought a new i5 6600 and a Gigabyte H170 mobo( DDR3 version).
I am using my old PC's 8GB RAM sticks but I read that using traditional DDR3 mem can fry the CPU due to the 1.5V voltage, compared to the 1.35V the DDR3L uses.
Is this true?Has anyone had any issues running Skylake CPU's with traditional DDR3 memmory sticks?
Thanks in advance!

Constantly running at ~12% more than designed for isn't healthy. Undervolting the ram will lead to an unreliable and unstable system.

Best course of action: Return the motherboard and buy a ddr4 version plus sticks.

@OP: you can buy DDR3L DIMMs instead. That is easier, faster and cheaper.

Unfortunately I cant do this right now.The matter is,how dangerous is this?

Well if you want to use DDR3 with an 1151 CPU, I would use a Z270 MoBo. It is desgined for DDR4 but the DDR3 still fits and the controller can run the DDR3 RAM without problems. In the end DDR4 would be advised.

This is the mobo I'm talking about. It says it does support DDR3 memmory.
My basic concern is if the 1.5V can cause harm to my CPU etc.

yes it can and mostlikely will. thats why I would take a Z270 MoBo intended for overclocking and supporting both.

But why would Gigabyte release a high end mobo with DDR3 support if It will damage the CPU?

wouldnt call a H110M a high end mobo. But for the same reason any other manufacturer sells them. As some customers wanting (for what ever reason) to buy a DDR4 CPu and still wanting to use DDR3.

Its a H170M.Anyway,I'll just stick with this for now and If I encounter any issues I'll see if I can find DDR3L memory..

I have the same motherboard with DDR 4. Pretty good motherboard

you should have bought a 775 board with ddr3 ram and an old core 2 quad.
would have been cheaper :bbamsmily:

i wouldnt be concerned at all. just let the settings on auto and everything should work fine.
just check cpu-z and tell us how it is going :2017stickyhotdog:

Naaah I just returned them and got a AsRock H110M DDR4 mobo just to be sure, along with new memory sticks. :steamhappy:

Your DDR3 RAM will work for a time before burning out your voltage controller. Killing the CPU and possibly the mobo.
