(Solved) Need help updating bios
Edit: Solved by runing the exe updater from a copy of windows 7. Worked as expected then and now i'm runing the cpu fine and dandy.

Basicaly i need to update my bios (from E7680IMS.H60 to E7680IMS.J20-this update adds ivy bridge 3rd gen cpu support) on my motherboard (H61M-P23 (B3)) to be able to use a new cpu (i7-3770) i've bought, But the update isn't standard format like older ones, which were just "put single file on usb stick and select it in bios to update".

This update is an exe which i have to run from the stick and it says "System will auto reboot after BIOS update". But it doesnt nothing after restarting. It temporarily creates a folder on the stick that has the bios file in it, and so i tried doing it manualy but the bios doesnt recognize it.

The old bios updates end with say h60 and this one is j00, but it is an update for this board because ive got another indentical board which has it updated to this version, yes ive tried copying the bios from that board to this and it wont recognize it again. No i cant just use that board because its got one ram slot broken and i will have half the ram in that case.

Please, i looked at all the tutorials and info i could find but found nothing on bios updates changing formats and bios update utilities not doing anything after restarting. Please if you have any idea how i could fix this, try to assist, because i don't want to throw my new cpu away

MSI website says:

* Please download and execute the file in USB pen drive only.
System will restart several times to update ME firmware after updated system BIOS.
Please DO NOT remove the USB pen drive until ME updated successfully.
* Please make sure you have read the SOP before you update the BIOS.
* MSI recommend you to update BIOS with ME8 only if you are using IvyBridge 22nm CPU.
* It is not possible to reflash back to ME7 if you already updated to ME8.

**Please reinstall driver after updating BIOS with ME8.
OS: Windows 7
OS: Windows XP

Well yeah i know that it says that and as i already said it doesn't do anything after i "execute the file in USB pen drive". It does show up with an application, and it shows a loading bar and then re-starts the pc, but thats it. It doesnt do anything afterwards. Boots back into windows and the bios ver is still the same. Yes i tried booting from the flash drive, doesnt work. From what i saw from tutorials it's supposed to restart and bios is supposed to show itself updating etc

What OS are you using? It might not work with Windows 8 and 10.

Yeah i just noticed that after all this... Using 10. Might try to instal a copy of 7 on a separate HDD and try to go from there. I just didn't think this would be an issue and assumed it would work since the app launches, but since 10 has different like bootingh stuff than 7 (no idea how to phrase that, you know no safe mode menu for example) that might be the reason

Windows 10 - Accessing Safe Mode

Set the Properties of that BIOS update exe to "WinXP SP3" or "Win7" and apply.
Then right click it and click "Run As Admin"

Well i know how to acess safe mode, and i doubt it'd be as easy as choosing win 7 in compatability mode. Never crossed my mind those two. Tried both just now. Makes zero difference.
You are putting the file directly on a FAT32 formatted usb flash drive and running the file from that, correct?

Yep. Checked that it's Fat32 multiple times
Typically you either need bootable FreeDOS on a FAT32 partition on the USB with the BIOS update file on it, boot that and run the BIOS update file. It is possible that simply putting the file on USB and attempting to run that from Windows will not work. That is how I updated BIOS on my old legacy BIOS Dell PC I think. I normally run Linux (from SSD), but also have Win7 on my main hard drive.

If it has UEFI instead of BIOS I think there is a way to automatically run the BIOS update on USB from UEFI during boot.

Hopefully the manufacturer or your motherboard should have instructions.

My MSI gaming laptop no longer turns on properly and I did not know if I had to install intermediate BIOS/UEFI updates before installing most recent. It was capable of UEFI, but came with Win7 (Oct 2013), so it defaulted to legacy BIOS. Models with Win8 or newer had BIOS/UEFI that defaulted to UEFI. But it no longer even boots to BIOS splash screen, so figuring out how to update its BIOS is no longer an issue.
I highly doubt those boards have UEFI, since they are way older than Win8/10

Seems odd that OEM system would have come with Win7 in 2013; since Win8 released back in Aug 2012. Yes UEFI boards were out by around Jan-March 2011 (such as P67), and some refreshed ones for FM2/AM3, such as ASUS Sabertooth 990FX

But I suppose it could have come down to the OEM and their choice offerings; when you had a choice upon system config to choose Win7 SP1 or Win8. As for most OEMs, they had not pulled Win7 as a choice until around the time Win8.1 appeared. As I remember with Dell for example, where if you went to their website and chose "Work" and then Desktop or Laptop, under that parameter, Win7 was still a choice for quite some time, until around 2015 when its life support ended.

If you are on a system that has UEFI, then you should have a Legacy BIOS option; this will not work to boot Win8/10 if that OS is already installed, however this mode might be required (especially on Laptops) to boot to USB.

Thanks a lot for your efforts guys, just solved it by doing an install of windows 7, and who woulda guessed it, the exe worked as expected as soon as i ran it from windows 7. The bios is up to date now and the cpu works fine. @Omega actually reminded me that it could be the system thats the cause which is something that i really wouldnt think of, but also thanks for your guys' time! Cheers :)

I'm guessing since this is a low end board they didnt really want to bother to support it for later systems.

Windows 10 should work ok on that platform; however it would be best to re-download/re-make your USB flash drive for Win10 via the latest media creation tool from MS.
https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows10

As long as your Win7 has SP1 installed, this tool should run fine.
Then use it to remake flash drive with very latest version of Win10; so u are ensuring its basically already the latest upon installing Win10 fresh.

You will want to recheck BIOS settings too prior to an OS install; to ensure things like Full UEFI Mode (if going to use Win10) and AHCI Mode for SATA are enabled. As AHCI Mode for SATA should be enabled anyways, to ensure native performance for SATA Disk Drives.

Thanks, but i'm too lazy to tweak stuff rn, might check it out later. For now i pretty much just deleted the dual boot option of windows 7 that i installed on one of my 2 hdd's since win 10's on my ssd, and also i deleted some system files of it, didnt want to format the drive since i have some important files on it.
Just move the files and format that HDD to fully rid it on OS based MBR and such.

Yeah will do, my ocd cant stand having those even if they dont really do anything to harm
