My computer runs as effectively as a toaster.
Well, newer games. My CPU is an i3-2120 (3.30 GHz) with 4gb RAM. What should I do to upgrade my computer? I don't even know where to start.

If you want to keep your current motherboard then find a second hand i7 3770 on Ebay, if you want a new motherboard then I recommend you get a G4560 and pair it with a 1050Ti.
Well yea, cause a toaster IS what you have there.
It's not good enough for gaming, period.

Get an i5 or i7 and 8-16GB RAM
Win10 64bit
A decent GPU like 1050 Ti 4GB, minimum

Thank you for the help. Is there something that runs a little bit cheaper than a i7 3770 but will still suffice?
This would be the cost of moving over to a new platform...

Oh dear.. still I thank you nonetheless, I'll have to go about saving some money.
Given the age, CPUs like 3570 or 3770 should be rather cheap.
Might still be over $100 range; but given that ones like i7-3770 were around $290+ range when brand new / current gen. It's well worth it.

You gonna need more RAM, I can guarantee that.
And a 64bit OS, like Win7 or 10

Best bet is keep the current machine as-is for low end stuff, internet browsing, music, etc.
And build a currrent gen system and ensure you get decent CPU and GPU.
For current gen, would be good idea to go towards G4560 minimum and 2x8GB DDR4-2400

A decent but affordable Motherboard with good features:
MSI B250M MORTAR
MSI Z270M MORTAR (get this if you want to use RAM above 2400Mhz, or OC a "K" model CPU)

If you already have OS such as Win7; you can re-use that Product Key on the new build, during Win10 install, to having a fully activate Win10 OS on your new system.

Ah, the 3570 would be manageable. I'm sorry for taking up so much of your time, but I just have a question regarding this. I haven't ever messed with hardware before. If I were to replace the CPU - the 2120 - with a 3570 - would my computer still run? I mean is the newer CPU compatable or do I have to buy entirely up-to-date parts?
Motherboards have a certain socket and chipset; which allow a wide range of CPUs and RAM that are supported by that platform overall.

If you'd like better assurance as to overall Motherboard support
install and run CPU-Z[www.cpuid.com]
Then go to Validate and click on Submit.
When the website loads up, copy and paste that web address into here.
This will share the basic specs of your current system, such as Motherboard Model

Thank you so much! I will look into all of this.

Hello again. I won't make a habit out of asking you for help, I promise. I have budgeted and believe I am able to afford a Core i5-2500 3.30GHz. Do you think that the upgrade from an i3 2120 is worth $57 USD? I feel bad about messaging you again, but you seem to know what you're doing.

Before we suggest anything like better CPU or RAM perhaps...
it would be extremely helpful if you could boot into Windows and then install and run CPUZ
the hardware specs shared via CPUZ validation would help better answer questions or make proper suggestions; based mostly around current Motherboard Model.

But yea feel free to ask for help anytime, not a bother. Thats what forums are for.
If I can't help or answer; plenty of others here can.

I'm very grateful for your kindness, it means a lot to me. I did as you said and uploaded my computers specifications to the website. https://valid.x86.fr/l0s0vi
And what is the full model of that system; since this is a Dell Desktop

The real issue here too is all you have is "intel hd graphics"
You can't run games with this; you need a dedicated Graphics card, something with AMD Radeon or NVIDIA Geforce; such as AMD RX-470, NVIDIA GTX 1050... etc.

=== EDIT ===

That Dell wont be worth upgrading; cause you'd be looking at something like:
> New better CPU (like i5-2500)
> New RAM (since u only have 2 DIMM slots)
> New Power Supply (to support things like GPU)
> New PCIE dedicated GPU card

Better to save up and build a whole new desktop with current gen parts.
