i7-6700 keeps Overheating, don't know why
Ok, so I bought a new computer about 2 months ago and nothing has been going on, except a 1 time CPU Temperature error that I fixed by changing the way the PC was placed. All of a sudden, my CPUs temperature everytime I get on my computer goes from 47C to 68C in about a 2 minute span. I am doing nothing and it just fires right up. I do not know if I have water cooling, and I don't think I have thermal paste, nor would I know how to do either. I just wanna play some H1Z1 without being scared that my computer is gonna explode or die from overheating. The circulation is fine, I've taken the glass cover off and cleaned any dust that was there (there was barely any) and I have tried to change power options, to change BIOS settings, I have no clue what I am doing, and I probably messed things up worse. This is a great computer, and I'm afraid that I would ruin it, right when I got it, from being clueless and just trying to do things on my own. Please help, thanks in advance.

Specs: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700 CPU @ 3.40 GHz (Not Overclocked)
16.0 GB Installed RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB Graphics Card
1 TB Hardrive + 120 GB SSD
Windows 10

what are your temperatures under load?? and you wont kill the cpu it will underclock or get slower if it is overheating but the temps you metioned are fine

I'm not sure, but ive gotten errors for my cpu temperature being too high, how can the temps be fine, im watching youtube and im at 54C, thats like 120 fahrenheit?

The cpu should be able to run at 90-100C before automatically turning the pc off to prevent damage. And the cpu temp going from 47C to 68C in 2 min is nothingspecial mine goos from 25C to 50C in 10 secs when I boot up a game.

54C is a bit high while watching youtube. also you have a K series cpu meaning you have a non stockcooler on it so it should run cooler than that. And where did you get the pc? Did someone build if for you, did you build it yourself or was it pre build?

i honestly dont even know if im using it to its full potential

The pc should be fine because you bought it pre build it comes pre-installed with all drivers (and a lot of bloatware) that the pc need to be used to its full potential. I think the pc is running at those temps because it has a cheap air cooler (or you are living in a hot climate maybe?) for the cpu.

You should only worry when the pc starts to run very VERY slow while playing games (the pc underclocking to cool down) or if it randomly turns off. Also the circulation is best with the side panels on.

are there any air/water coolers that you reccomend? and no haha, its pretty cold i live in kansas and we are actually in a freezing rain storm soon so yeah. i already do have the side panels on, so i think maybe i do have a bad air cooler and ill look into some to replace it. thanks a lot man

Those temps are normal as so is the quickness in change.
Intel 6th Gen you are fine unless it's reaching above 80-85*C
Get a better cooler, toss the stock cooler to the side and don't bother using those, like ever.
Get a nice tower cooler, such as:

I am using a Cooler Master Hyper 103 it is competetive priced and high preformance. It costs about 20-30 euro/dollar my intel i7 5820k (overclocked to 4.1 ghz) is running 20C when idle, 25C while browsing the internet and around 50C while gaming. So I advise this cooler I have only had good experiences with it so far. If you dont know how to install one it is best is you ask someone maybe a friend who knows how to install a cpu cooler to do it for you. Its not very hard to replace a cooler but if done wrong it could make your cpu cooler not preform optimally.

Still better to just go with a decent 120mm Cooler. They will potentially run cooler while also being silent. 80mm or 92mm do not have a good/high CFM rate per Db

Plus 120 or 140 mm fans are just much more common now. So if you buy say Hyper-212-EVO (which are under $30 USD) and you don't like that fan, or the included fan dies, you can easily replace that with pretty much whatever Case Fan of that size you wish.

I have an i7-6700K overclocked to 5.0 without water cooling....His temps even before i overclocked are way high compared to what i was getting. He needs to get an after market cooler on there ASAP to see if that fixes the problem or send it back. If it continues at the temps it's at now it's not going to last very long

thanks guys ill look into what you guys said, means a lot and glad to know that my computer isnt that bad lol but yeah thanks guys :D
I had the stock cooler and thats what temps i got using youtube and i stopped using chrome because it has memory bloats especially if you leave tabs open and use too much add ons. When my pc started hitting 80 and 90 while playing starbound i went out quickly and bought an evo cpu cooler. On a cold day my temps surfng around 20 to 30 hot days about 30 to 40 , when gaming im usually 60 and 50's , Im suprised i got away with gaming with a stock cooler for 3 years.

Cus its so hot in the summer i leave my side panel off which helps , In Autumn and Winter i put it back on.

6700Ks change temp very quickly, I suspect they've got very sensitive/direct thermal sensors since my older 3770K has a much longer lag before displaying a change in temp.
