Asus Z170-A and non K I5 Processor
First off, I'm a Dell PC fan but in November I decided to build my own PC. Iv'e never built one before and I have always wanted to build one for general family use and gaming.

I didn't know much about the exact parts to buy (I'm still learning). I ended up buying an Asus Z170-A motherboard board. Now, this is a motherboard made to overclock PCU's. I put in an Intel I5 6500 3.20Ghz processor tha is non K.

What I want to know is, if I have the bios settings on default, will the bios/motherboard still try to overclock it? I read somewhere that trying to overclock a locked processor can damage the processor. I don't want to damage my processor. So, will my I5 be OK if I have the motherboard/bios settings all on default?

Thanks!

If you don't tell it to try to overclock, it'll leave it at default.
I don't want the CPU to overclock. There's a lot of things in the bios that I don't understand yet but I'm trying to learn. I just want to make sure all I have to do is set it to default and that will stop/prefent any overclocking.
Non-K CPUs are Ratio-Locked, that means you can't overclock one even if you wanted to. There's a lock preventing either you or BIOS from tampering with the onboard settings. Only K series have this lock disabled, allowing them to overclock.

You can make sure everything is set to default by opening BIOS and, with my MSI BIOS, pressing F5. This restores Optimised Defaults - basically a reset to stock button. Some motherboards have a factory hard-reset option as well, stripping absolutely everything back to factory default.

And welcome to the builder's club.
Thanks for the information. I really loved builing a PC. I'm really hooked on it now. lol. I really like watching videos on motherboards. I now want to build another PC (mini ITX) but it seems all the cool motherboards are for overclocking. I want to buy more motherboards but I don't want to overclock yet. I want to make sure I can run non-K CPUs in the Asus or MSI Z170A motherboards. I think the next motherboards I buy will be MSI.

My first PC game I'm playing is Hitman and I really love it!

You can absolutely run Non-K chips in those motherboards. Like I said, the chip itself is locked - the motherboard physically couldn't overclock it even if you ordered it to.

As for games, PC has a few absolute gems to offer.

For starters, PC has a big "Indie" gaming industry - these are small teams of people who make games because they love it. Often these games are very cheap and often very innovative. It's a minefield, for every one good Indie game you've find fourty-nine iredeemably terrible ones.

I would start with Life is Strange as your introduction to Indie. Not only is it a superb game, but it's also free. It's nothing like what you have on console, it's basically an interactive book/tv show with a really great story.
Thanks again for the info!
Overclocking doesn't occur unless you apply it yourself.
