AM4 is coming this March. Wait just a bit longer and upgrade the whole thing.
I second this, I'm also running an AMD Phenom II (1055T), but I'm waiting for Ryzen. I admit, it's going to require a new mobo and ram too. If you can't wait, there is Skylaky and Kabylake which are both very good. Just stay away from AM3/+ as there are better stuff for the same money.
FX8350/70 are the most reasonable cpus for your situation with a small overclock, if you want to overclock the FX8300 that's also an option, I'd stay away from the 9590s because most of the FX8xxx make it to 4.4-4.5ghz drawing less power and only needing reasonable cooling ie 212evo or H7.
Little tip if you do get an FX, 1st thing to do in bios is disable c1e, cool n quiet and turbo core.
With new games there's quite a jump from x 4 965BE @ 3.7ghz to FX8350 @4.4ghz.
Ps, if your gpu is entry level then all the cpu horse power in the world won't help.
Best bet at this point is wait for AMD RyZen AM4 Desktop CPUs/Motherboard to release, then re-evaluate a more logical upgrade; as any real upgrade would mean new Motherboard+CPU+DDR4 RAM whether you go Intel, or the newer AMD AM4
If you are on anything AMD still, and you are looking to upgrade. Instead of "the only choice is Intel" wait and see what real-world results look like when reviewers get their hands on the newer AMD stuff; then see what you wish to upgrade to after we have all that data on-hand to share with folks. Right now that means waiting til around end of Jan, beginning of Feb. Most of what will come to market for AM4 might not be available until around mid-Feb, early March however. Have to wait and see. Vega GPUs won't likely will not role out that early either, those generally would come trickling in at a later time, between Spring and Fall.
Going from a Phenom II X4 or X6 to any FX CPUs; are just a side-grade. They have better cache and instruction sets, that is basically all. And unless you already have a very good 990FX Board, then anything lower generally will have issues running an FX CPU properly, as intended, or simply would be about the same performance-wise as most Phenom II X4/X6 series. And any FX-9 should simply be avoided, it will impact your power bill if you run it under high loads alot.
Nothing wrong with waiting but if the Ryzen remotely catches up to the upper end i5/i7 I belive you'll be paying top dollar for it and still need a new mobo and ddr4 ram.
There are a lot of games now that are minimally impacted by the FX8350 $140ish overclocked.
Just pointing out there're pros and cons and for me personally sitting with a FX8350 I could care less about ryzen other than curiosity. All the recent games I've been trying on free week ends and trial are playing fantastic on the FX8350, I finally bought gta 5 and fallout 4 and contrary to popular belief the FX8350 4.4ghz runs smooth and fine at very high settings yes intel runs them higher fps but the FX can deliver a reasonably effective playable frame rate.

I'm not saying emphatically get the FX83xx but price wise it's a cheap upgrade from a x4 965.

DOOM ^ gets like min 104 fps all else being equal, what's so bad about that.
Deus EX only has a min 10 fps spread from FX8350 stock to an i7 6700k.
But it's up to the OP if he wants to toss the am3+ board and start over so he may as well have some basic info to make a decision.
