Stable versatile PC controllers for several players to use in one PC?
Hi! I'm interested in getting three hand-held controllers to play split-screen PC games with my two children from the sofa. What I'm worried about is stability and ease of use. Games like Awesomenauts ought to be perfect for this, but this kind of thread worries me:

I have used cheap PC controllers from obscure manufacturers a while back, using third party configuration software, and I remember it being a pain. I would like to know how easy and plug-and-play I can expect this to be for a variety of games, if we buy the right hardware? What hardware is the right hardware? I could not afford three of the latest XBox controllers which are very expensive, but three XBox 360 wireless controllers is just about within reach. Are cheaper brands reliable?

We have two PCs we use for gaming, one Windows 7 and one Windows 8. Not upgrading OS. Thanks for any advice!

Three Xbox 360 controllers will be great. They are the most stable and sturdy controllers for the PC, and are very resistant to damage, which is good with kids.

I don't recommend off brand controllers. You will run into compatibility and durability problems. Stick with the good, ol' 360 controllers.

Xbox One controllers would be even better. They're a lot lighter than Xbox 360 controllers and can be run without batteries using a Micro USB cable plugged directly into the PC. If anything they're even tougher than the X360 version.

360 or Xbone controllers.

Original Microsoft controllers, no third party, they generally have issues working on PCs.

I have a XBox 360 and a XBox One S controller, if money is no object, get the One S controller. Otherwise, get the older but still good 360.

Thanks a lot for the advice everyone! Sounds like the XBox controllers are a good bet then.
