Gigantic air coolers; anything I should know?
I have an i7 6700K and a CPU cooler(Phanteks PH-TC12DX) that's just not-quite powerful enough for my peace of mind. I want to upgrade to a full-size Twin-Tower Cooler, and after consulting reviews and trusted friends I'm looking at a Cryorig R1 Ultimate.

But are there any hidden quirks/risks/problems with such a massive cooler? Anything I should know that isn't covered in the review? The R1 is twice as big as anything I've used before and I'm feeling slightly daunted at the prospect of installing it.

And finally, the R1 has two fans by default and the possibility of adding a third. Would I be fine running it with just the two, or should I invest in a third fan straight out of the box?

Unless you are OC'ing heavily; you don't need those larger coolers.
The only real issue with some larger coolers is blocking RAM.
As long as you have low-profile RAM, you should be fine.
Like ones without Heat-spreaders, or say Corsair Vengeance LPX

Manufacturer specs say the fans are adjustable between 30-35mm of clearance for RAM. 2 fans should be fine on that beast.

The CRYORIG R1 Universal Dual Tower Heatsink does not have the RAM issue. Looks exactly the same too.

The regular R1 would probably fit better. I've got low-profile RAM but quite a bulky I/O shield, I'm more concerned about fitting at the back than clearing the RAM.

On their website there are instructions to make an origami template to see if it will fit your bulky M7. http://www.cryorig.com/r1-ultimate_us.php

Nothing special really besides making sure it will fit your MB/RAM and case. Most clearance issues are caused by RAM with unnecessarily large heatspreaders and cases with insufficient width. A third fan will make a very negligible difference and isn't worth the cost imo. The cooler will be close to your rear exhaust fan and top vents/fan, which will be more than enough airflow to expel the hot air coming through the fins. These big coolers are heavy, but with the backplate and proper installation it's not really a concern.
Don't lug your PC around so casually. Big air coolers can damage motherboards.
