Why does GSync not work with an HDMI cable?
I'm curious why G-Sync only works on Displayport and not HDMI. What are the differences between the two, and why does the type of cable I use effect a seemingly unrelated onboard system like Gsync?

Sorry for this one-year bump, but some of us put our PCs into the entire living room setup. So the PC must first go through the A/V receiver, before we feed it to the monitor and/or TV.

So since I don't see any DP receivers around, I appear to be doomed. I will have to connect my audio and my video seperately which will take away the very useful OSD audio level display.
Having a 1440p/144Hz/GSYNC monitor that uses HDMI would be a life saver for me...

Why would you want to? High end Display and PC you should be using DisplayPort

Three things.

- Manufacturer, as they can setup what can do what, example a monitor with 144hz is only possible with DP, compare to HDMI because that how they set it up, which you have to read the manual, to confirm what it allows you to use, despite what HDMI cable 1.4 able to do.

- Software, which if Nvidia only allow Gsync / feature with a certain update, cable, device, or etc... Always confirm what it's allowed to do what over what.

- Bandwidth between the HDMI, and DP. DP had the largest bandwidth since 2014, until 2018 which is a 4 years gap, which basically means Manufacturers are more likely to use ports for DP, than HDMI for higher / demanding features. Hence why DP is so common when it comes to high refresh rates monitors.

Was reading the posts and had a question for you guys.

I have a Freesync monitor that only has an HDMI port and a 1070 graphics card that has HDMI & display port. If I were to use a display port to hdmi adaptor on my monitor, would I be able to use Gsync/freesync now that nvidia is compatible with freesync tech?

from what i have read Nvidia is only supporting freesync or rather "vesa adaptive sync" over Display Port.. using an adapter would likely not work, but if you try it i would be interested to know the results because i can't find any info online regarding the issue

The display port cable is needed for the physical GSYNC module, if you can get GSYNC compatable mode working on your freesync monitor is dependant entirely on the monitor in question, only a handful are actually rated to work fully upto nvidia standards, those which aren't will vary and only way to find out is to try it, you can do this via your hdmi cable, converting them wouldn't work anyway.

Far as I know you need it to be display cable only, but if you have a HDMI to DP right now, then give it a try, but I doubt it work, as I only heard being DP only. Here is a list by Nvidia stating which Monitors works, they didn't list them all.

I have ordered a cable online, they are pretty cheap, will have it tomorrow.
The reason for wanting to see if this works is because I am getting terrible stuttering from vsync and am looking for ways to improve it. If this doesn't work, will look at getting a new monitor. Will keep you guys posted.

Doesn't it have DP? Also did you confirm your monitor is supported by Nvidia?

You can go for a freesync monitor that's supported by the list I given you, this way you don't have to pay extra for Gsync, but it's up to you.

My BenQ XL2730 isn't on the list but works fine though it does require refresh rate set no higher than 120hz for G-Sync compatible mode to work.

NVIDIA announced that they would support freesync not 2 weeks before I bought my gsync monitor. I didn't want to deal with the fuss of limited compatibility and sub par performance using an NVIDIA GPU on anything other than a gsync monitor. The money was well spent in my opinion

Unfortunately this monitor is no longer available for purchase, not in the UK anyway. But yea, after going through all the prices of g-sync monitors, I could buy a second hand 1080ti for those kind of prices so don't really think it's worth it. 27inch monitor is the size monitor i currently have and think it's about perfect, would be open to suggestions on monitors compatible in that size.
