CPU cooler whistle when booting PC
Just tested a new rig yesterday, everything works fine however the CPU fan launches with an ~3-5 second delay after I press the power button and spins so fast that it starts whistling. It goes like that for about 3 seconds and then quiets down and works normally until the next time I boot up.
What's interesting is that it starts the whistling only when I boot after a complete shutdown - no loud noises occuring when I reboot or awaken it from hibernation.

I have no idea what causes this, checked the power connections on the motherboard and all is fine. CPU temps 40-50 C in idle mode, 50-60-rarely 70 in load.
CPU is i5 6600.

Should I worry about this? And even if not, any idea what may be causing this and how to fix it? Cause the sound itself, albeit very brief, isn't too pleasant.

Can you confirm that you have plugged the CPU fan into the correct connection on your motherboard, depending on what board you have, there will be one or two CPU fan header connections, check with your motherboards manual to confirm you have it plugged into the correct header..

Well I bought the PC from a colleague of mine who works in IT so he knows his stuff, says it's normal.

But I'll double check the connection, thanks

P.S 40-50 C is still pretty high temp for an i5 on idle.. would expect it to be mid 20's at least unless you are in a really hot country..?

I have an i7 7700K Kabylake clocked at 5.1Ghz and on idle that sits at 23-25, and 75-77 full load..

Well it has been in use for 6 months before I bought the rig. You think I have to change the thermal paste?

Also I bought a GTX 1080 which is arguably overkill for the system, it may be bottlenecking a bit and thus give out higher temps.

Or maybe the cooler isn't running properly. It IS running though so I'm not sure what's wrong

That is not normal. Check bios and see what it says under oc monitor.

What cooler is it? if its Intels OEM cooler id replace it with something better.

Whether its rare or not, getting up to 70C with a CPU that isnt overclocked isnt a good thing. The temps are technically fine, but that shouldnt be happening.

The fan spinning up and getting loud when the PC turns on is normal for PWN fans though, depending on the quality of the fan as well.

May be you have very cheap heatsink (it's alluminium or cuprum piece of metal under fan), or thermopaste dies of it's age (or there are no thermopaste at all, while thermopaste should be on top of CPU and under heatsink).

the thermopaste is definitely there, been in use for just 6 months. also I've exaggerated the idle temps - they are about 35. it's weird, the CPU got heated up when I started playing Doom but after a long play session the temps have actually lowered o 50-60. Maybe the fan speed is adjusting to the load.

And like I said it's almost dead silent at all times except when booting

That is still terrible temps, check your bios settings, and or get a better heatsink and cpu fan, and new thermal paste. Even bottlenecking it shouldn't be making it run in the 50-60 range consistently.

It's normal on newer boards; even most AMD 970/990FX Boards; for example:
> Power On
> Zero CPU Fan until the actual BIOS POST
> CPU Fan kicks into max RPMs as a test, then quiets down once the BIOS takes over.

Thanks. I'm very confused with the amount of people with opposite opinions about this both in this thread and irl among my tech savvy friends.

The MB is MSI H170A PC Mate.
The temps I've originally posted were too high due to having tested games, I'm now getting late 20-s, mid 30-s in idle, 40-s to early 50-s under load. Dunno what caused that spike to 70 but it ahsn't been happening again thus far.

The whistle isn't too loud or even too long, it just boosts and immediately starts quieting down until it because inaudible.

I'd still like to do smth about it if possible but it's definitely not the thermal paste. Maybe the cooler, I don't know what the model is but I assume it's a base one that came with the CPU.

Replace the cooler if its the stock kind.
A nice 120mm cooler will cool alot better, while be alot quieter too.

If you do not want, or can fit a large tower like cooler, such as:
http://pcpartpicker.com/product/93Crxr/cryorig-cpu-cooler-h7

you can get one like this instead:

thanks, I'll consider that.

Don't have these exact models where I live but the shops offer Cryorig CR-M9i.

Cryorig CR-M9i is only 92mm w/ 3 heatpipes, not really good.

Many regions dont sell Cryorig, maybe look at CoolerMaster Hyper212-X or EVO

Found the EVO one, thx.

Should I replace it outright? Everything works fine atm and I've JUST finished assembling this weekend, don't feel like taking the rig apart again yet
