Gaming on GeForce 940MX mobile graphics card
What is the desktop equivalent of GeForce 940MX? What graphics cards equivalents (older GPU models included) should I search for in "System requirements" in Steam Store pages?

I want to replace my old notebook (i5-2410M (dual-core 2.3 GHz) / GeForce GT 540M) with something like dual-core i3, i5 or i7 model ending on "U" and the GeForce 940MX graphics card.

I want to play some old and indie games on it. ('cause it won't be enough for "main" 2016 and 2017 titles)

I don't have enough money to buy a fully-gaming notebook (because a quad-core "-HQ" cpu and even GTX 1050 Ti gpu model is twice more expensive that this one) and a desktop build is not an option too (I already have a good modern gaming desktop PC (that I upgraded over time) but I want a notebook for my other living place, also I'll regularly move it between locations)

Personally I wouldn't waste the money on a laptop with a 940mx if you already have a laptop with a 540m. The performance gain just won't be that great.

I am curious though, I have an older laptop with a 550m and it can play any modern game at lower resolutions but since it's a 15 inch it still looks good. The 540m should be plenty for older games and some indie titles so I guess I'm confused why you want to upgrade in the first place.

There really isn't a desktop equivalent to the 940MX, unless you're willing to go all the way back to the really low end stuff of the 600 series, which is absolutely terrible by 2017 standards.

It'll still do the job if you're only into some light gaming during some off school hours.

940MX is very weak like a GT-720 or 740

It's not anywhere close to say; GTX 950M or 960M
To be honest, if the Laptop has a decent CPU, like most of the i7, the Intel HD GPU is about on par with the 940MX, that goes to show how bad it is. Can't even do well in CSGO at 1366x768 with the in-game visuals on low.

In fact my GT 540M lags in CSGO at 1366x768 at low settings. Not a big lag, but big enough to miss the enemies (I still manage to get some kills). Why do you think that a 940MX - a card that is 3 generations ahead - will lag too?

Honestly, i think it can handle CSGO
But for the previous Laptop, any number of reasons could have caused it to lag at low settings.

I know that 540M is like 8800GTS (at least many old games in Steam have that as requirements), but less that 8800GT and more than 8600GT.

So I'd like to know what models from older cards series (8xxx, 9xxx, GTx 2x0, GTx 4x0) the 940MX is comparable to. Just because lots of games do not use cards as "GT 720" as requirements, but are using much older models.

You'll get 150+fps with medium settings under 1366x768 for CSGO.

True, but then no one would want a PC plagued with porn site popups to serve as the basis.

If you want to play big title games, that are demanding, I highly recommend looking for something much better, but if this is solely for the purpose of soruce games, LOL, and some light games, you be fine with the dual core CPU, and 940MX, but if you try to play heavy demanding games, that's where you may run into some issues, such as GTA V, Arma 3, Witcher 3, the new Hitman 2016 game, etc...

This person has laptop using i5 7200U that is a dual core with hyper threading, and 940MX, for CS:GO. soruce games are not heavy demanding games.

Here a breakdown of 940MX vs 950M, which the 950M wins by a landslide.

Here a breakdown of 940MX vs 740 desktop version, which the 940MX win, but not very much.

No, no on the notebook.
GTA V, Arma 3, Witcher 3, the new Hitman 2016 game, etc...
I'll play these games on my main desktop computer (it's powerful enough) when I'm at home (I mean my main living place).

A laptop you wanted that has dual core CPU, as well a 940MX in it, is going to be ok for light games, such as soruce games, some old titles, indie games, and some emulators.

Also may I ask what is your budget?
