GF is looking to build a PC for SIMS4
She's building a new rig. Only game she plays is Sims 4.
Say we want to be able to max it out.

We already have a
i5 3470
P8z77 v lk motherboard
12GB ddr3 RAM

What other components should we buy to be able to max out Sims 4 at 1080p
and how much money are we looking at in general?

Looking to keep it as cheap as possible.

For sims 4 you should go with a GTX 1050 TI as your GPU.

Right on I guess we picked the right card

Yeah although what is considered minimum these days is a pretty solid card. I saw a benchmark of the 1050ti outperforming the 680 from a few years ago. Games haven't been keeping up in terms of pushing new hardware to their limits and the low end cards are always getting better. There are no more PC exclusives to melt the new hardware.

Thanks for all the advice in this thread guys.

We ended up going with the evga 1050ti, 50$ tower, 500W PSU, Win10, and a 256GB ssd

already had a CPU cooler

decided to ignore the ODD for now

important: choose a quality PSU like seasonic M12II evo 520W/620W (~70$?)

GTX 1050 or 1050 Ti won't last you very long as far as should you try running anything super demanding; or when things come out down the road... look at a AMD 480 or NVIDIA 1060 6GB

The rest of your specs are fine; get a decent power supply; like Seasonic 520W for around $45

Don't get a 1050ti if you want to max out sims 4. The next best card is the rx 470 which will be able to max out or come close to maxing out any game in 1080p with ~60 fps or more. Rx 480 is about $20 more, with around ~10% more performance (which isn't worth it unless you have the money to spare)

edit - 1050 ti may actually be able to get away with it, but 470 will last longer and in case she decides to play other games or perhaps the next sims that comes out, it's worth the extra $30 or so

What you have is fine. Just get a random case and some storage and done. No GPU needed for sims.

Who said anything about max settings? And who really needs that really for sims?
Safe bet a GF is not planning to engage a bragging contest that she has SAAx8 or something like that set -- or look for 200 fps to show the balloons.

Even id need for a GPU does emerge it can be plugged in later when the box is up and running, having a clue what exactly is needed.

She won't likely be playing anything other than Sims and even then she said she didn't really care whether she could max it out or not. I kind of took the liberty of finding her something that can max it out cause I figured it could be done with a relatively cheap card.

That 550Ti really isn't too bad of a little card. It's equivalent to what would've been considered top tier cards 4 years ago.
