And then use 6th or 7th Gen LGA-1151 based CPU
What kind of budget did you have in mind for new Motherboard and CPU?
What are all your current hardware specs?
Especially Power Supply and RAM.
You'll want to do a clean install of Win10 64bit as well after such a hardware change.
I didn't know you could get LGA1151 mobos that support DDR3 RAM. Thanks, I must look into that.
As for LGA1150, I just read that it's at the end of the line - Intel won't be producing any more CPUs for it, so it will be passe in a few years. Having said that, LGA1151 will probably go out of date some time after that when they come up with the next type of socket. So, you can't win!
My specs:
2 x 4GB DDR3 1600Mhz RAM
Corsair 550W PSU
Depending on budget and your expectations on performance and use time buying 4th gen may be a good option (if you have access to reliable HW and fair price diff).
That is not the point really. Still best to buy something more current so it can possibly last you as long as possible.
Don't see the point of looking back before 6th Gen because of such limited options for older stuff when it comes to boards and cpus, so why bother. Something newer and faster generally costs roughly the same.

Upgrading to a new mobo can be expensive - cpu, mobo, memory and maybe a new copy of windows. There is little point doing it for a small jump in performance.
Often it is the graphics card that needs the update, not the cpu.
The new ryzen cpus may be a better choice than an i5 intel at the moment.
Plus it would be a waste for such a CPU change; such as going from FX-6 to FX-8
First off, OP can get a DDR3 Intel Motherboard, like I suggested.
And you never need a new OS, period.
