Keep my sapphire nitro+ rx480 8gb, or get an evga 980 ti classified?
I bought the sapphire rx480 last year when I started a new build, and I have no complaints about it for the price. It did everything I was expecting it to do and then some. Until a few days ago.

My roommate bought a 4k tv and Wanting to give his build that extra push for 4k gaming, he bought an auros 1080ti. That leaves him with a spare 980ti and offered it to me for 300$.

My setup right now is:
Fx-8320e
16gb ram
Rx480
3x 1080p monitors for 5760x1080 widescreen.

Is it worth it for me to spend the money and get the 980ti? I've tried it and it is awesome, with obvious fpd improvements, but I only really play at 1080p.

With the new ryzen 5 out, and my cpu being the obvious bottleneck should I just save my money to buy a new ryzen cpu/mobo/ram bundle? Or just go for the 980ti and maybe a different fx cpu of which both options would set me back maybe 400$

980ti is a great gpu but is still very good at 1920x1080p, depends by which kind of games you play and what settings, framerates.
Someone is fine with 45/50fps ultra, someone prefer high settings 60fps, someone 60 with all ultra all AA max.
I would stay with rx480 which is a very good gpu but not sure about yours preferences.
I chug my pc between the living room (1080p 120hz tv) or work area (ultra wide 1080p x3 60hz) depending on what I'm currently working on and what games. With that said a 60fps minimum at ultra settings is my preference. If I'm able to hit avg 120fps (especially when gaming on Tv, even with some settings lowered) then thats great.

I'd say I'm trying to get feedback from anyone with the rx480 that has a better cpu and see what they would do given the option for getting a 980ti for cheap.
That's a good deal, but you can just buy another rx480 for 250$ and have better fps in most of the games than 980ti. If you have a good psu and compatible motherboard ofc. Oh i overlooked the cpu, might be a bottleneck.

I wouldn't buy that card for $300 when you have no warranty and the GTX 1070 costs a little more for a card that runs many games at the same performance or better.

I was thinking about that, but the hit or miss game support for crossfire makes it unappealing for me.

I guess I'm just wondering if the 980ti is future proof enough to last me another 2 years of 1080p gaming.

Edit:

Saw the previous post just after I wrote this. You do make a good, at that price I guess a 1070 would be better future proofing and includes all the newer bells and whistles. Why dd you have to make it harder for me? Lol jk I appreciate the insight

The 480 and 980ti are very similar to each other. I'd stay with the 480 since the performance difference is negligable, or even in the 480's favor since its more frequently updated.

Or I'm confusing the performance between a 1070 and the 980ti. I forget.

Hmm yea, nothing AMD 400 series comes close to touching a 980 Ti

480 and 1060 are more along the lines of GTX 970 performance.
So basically the performance of a GPU that used to be around $350 range
Some of the 480 8GB and 1060 6GB OC models are more around GTX 980 performance.

980 Ti & 1070 are more closely matched; which AMD can't touch really except maybe with a R9 390X or FuryX

For that high tier performance, if you are looking for that from AMD, wait for VEGA.

980ti vs 1070 ^.

The Rx 480 is no where near the 980ti.

Depending on the game the 980ti and 1070 are closely matched ^.

Cheapest full sized ^ gtx1070 8GB today seems to be $374 ^ so $300 for a used 980ti would be a little out of line.

Ps, depends if you're running the 3x 1080p as one as to how or if the FX8xxx even bottlenecks.

Even though the 980ti smokes the 480 the 1070 kinda smokes the 980ti and it can be had for $350 on sale, Talk your friend down 50 bucks :steammocking:
thanks a lot for sharing your insights and suggestions. All in all I ended up getting the card for about 150 after selling the AMD one which made it an easier decision to make.

It would be a good upgrade, but not for $300. I would say $200 go for it. Since you can get a 1070 new with warrenty etc for $350-$400 now.

For $200 you could also get another 480 and almost double fps in most games.
You can still get 980 Ti, they going on Ebay, some even cheaper than a 1060 6GB OC
NOT worth to get the 980 ti with your fx8320e. It will bottleneck like crazy in 75 out of 100 games.
$300 for marginal improvement
