Using a PS3 controller on my PC.
I'm using an older laptop, it runs on Windows 7. Does anyone know ANY way to use a PS3 controller OTHER THAN Motioninjoy? I tried using it and it nearly fried my computer.

Why not use motionjoy? The progam works fine.

Hmm cause it works just fine via Steam Client; u don't need that crap-ware any longer.

If it does not work via your specific BT adapter; then use a USB-to-MicroUSB male to male Data-Sync cable.

So all I need to do is plug my PS3 controller into my USB port with the charging cord it came with and Steam will recognize it, right? I knew XBox controllers could do this since it's a Microsoft product (Like my computer), but I had no idea it would work with my controller. Thanks for the help, but if it doesn't work, feel free to suggest anything else.

You must use a cable. Otherwise you would need a special wireless adapter which you probably don't have.

I don't have one 'cause I'm cheap lol. I never found a decent use for a BT Dongle.

It must be a Data-Sync USB cable; not a Charge-Only cable.
The reason a charge only cable works on the Consoles is because the Wireless connection is kept in-tact when connecting this way. You won't have that wireless on PC, so you need Data-Sync cable, which actually has the data wires.

And how much do those usually go for?

Dont think so. My ps4 controllers work on pc with the included usb cable. My pc doesn't have any wireless connectivity so the included cable must have data sync. Should be the same with ps3.

The cable included with the playstation controller is a data-sync cable the controllers need to sync with the console before they can connect to it with bluetooth.

It's typically found at any store that normally carries such typical cables (figure around $5 or so)
Just ensure it is a full data-sync cable and not charge only and you should be fine.

Here is an example:

*USB to Mini-B (Data-Sync) Cable - Male to Male
*Reference: http://i.ebayimg.com/thumbs/images/g/wGoAAOSwn51UZq~2/s-l225.jpg

NOT to be confused with USB-to-Micro (which is more typical for Phones, Tablets, XBO, PS4, Steam Controllers)

But yes, try your existing cable to see if it is Data-Sync; you will know because the Device will show in the system; if it is Charge-Only, this can't happen.

Would it matter if the PS3 (And controllers/cables) I have is a Gen 1? It's the oldest model.

Nope. As long as it is a data-sync cable its fine. They are always included with the ps3 otherwise you would not be able to connect the controller to the console.

Thanks for the help guys/gals, I'll let you know if it works or not!

So, here's my update on my progress:

I believe I have a data-sync USB cord, and it installed the driver information the PS3 controller came with.
I tried playing Blood & Bacon, a game with full controller support, but I had no controls.

Does anyone have and clues as to why this isn't working?

See if the controller works in Steam big picture mode. (click the controller icon on the top right in Steam.
