How does airflow work with cases with massive front plates?
Hello, decent cases like the NZXT S340 seem brilliant at glance, but how does air flow through it with that massive block infront and behind?

There are usually air intakes on the bottom of the case or on the top. I think the NZXT S340 has them both on the top of the case and on the bottom. And the NZXT S340 is a budget enthusiast case the quality is decent but not great. Its still a awesome case tho. Just look at this picture: http://images.anandtech.com/doci/9431/NZXTS340_06.JPG you can clearly see a hole on the bottom of the front pannel. And here you can see it also has one on top: http://www.legitreviews.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/nzxt-s340-mid-tower-5-645x445.jpg

On the NZXT S340 yes.
They have side grills which intake the air directing it inside across the front to where the fans are located. This design is normally done to reduce dust, reduce noise levels, and allows dust filters to clean more dust out before it enters the system. NZXT S340 has the grills on top/bottom, but I assume it works the same way.

I have the S340 Elite and the front is not flush with the actual front intakes. There's a 1 inch Gap all the way around so air still intakes.

I have a front 280mm radiator with 2x 140mm fans and they intake just fine. You can see some YouTube videos as to how the front snaps on but leaves space all the way around.

If it looks restrictive to air flow it is. The path of least restiction is what you should be looking for.
A good looking case and case that provides good airflow are not one in the same.

Sorry, that's bull. The front plate has a full 2-inch clearance all the way around and air gets in just fine. My water temps barely get to 35C under full load for over an hour. My GPU temps are also low since air flow inside the case is fine.
Just set most/all fans to intake and let them blow air through the case's gaps.
