how much of a difference does an SSD make?
i use a regular HDD and but i see so many people using SSD's instead. Is the performance really worth the huge price difference?

Hmm yea, like any HDD is a complete system bottleneck. And will always sub-perform when the OS is running off such a drive.

Compared to a hard drive. A lot. Much faster. There is no seek time that a hard drive head needs. Much faster boot times & generally faster for everything else.

They are more expensive that Hard drives per GB.
For gaming the optimum is a ssd for a boot drive. Possibly one for games.
Another option is SSD caching a hard drive (not for the OS) for most other storage.

Yet another option is what I did. The poor man's/cheapskate's option. I bought a fast 2GB conventional HDD. Then set up a 16GB USB3 (make sure it's 3!) thumb drive as your dedicated ReadyBoost drive. It'll cache the hard drive for you.

The difference is huge. A normal HDDs trasfer rate speed reach upto only 100 MB/s in Read. The trasfer rates from SSDs are 550MB/s +++.

If you are thinking about to buy one, choose this one: Samsung 850 EVO[amzn.to]
I run two Samsung 850 EVOs and the difference is huge!

250 GB for OS's + 500 GB for games.

Plus a Seagate SSHD with 8 GB cache for video streaming, storage, etc.

Why wait 60 seconds for something to load when you can wait just 10 seconds!?

I have 3 fairly old 60 GB SSDs.
I use my PC for more than gaming.
I use primo cache as caching software.
The first is a boot drive that is cached using 8 GB of main memory (out of 32 GB). It works better than windows caching. The swap file and hibernation are tunred off saving a lot of space on the boot SSD.
The two other SSDs are in a software raid 0 config. They are used to cache a 2TB drive for games (read only). Load times are fast for games. So its about 110 GB cache for the gaming drive - about 1 GB/s read speed optimum.

Using the old SSDs & paying for the sotware, it was much cheaper that big capacity SSDs. The performace is comprable to using the musch more expensive but faster PCi express ones.

They are cheap now; get 500GB or 1TB

yea i wouldn't say cheap

Boot times: HDD ~1min, SSD ~10s.

And generally the entire system is more responsive and quicker. Also speeds up game loading times but most ppl cannot afford to keep games on ssd's. I myself have 2TB and 1TB SSD's dedicated entirely to steam.

Seriouslee homie g funk. You would think you had upgraded your whole pc to something better. Especially if you never used an ssd before.

It really does make a difference, iTz Bullz i. This is one of those things where you do not need any benchmarks to make sure you upgraded to something better. You WILL feel the difference with an SSD. How we lived in a world when ssd's did not exist? I have no idea.

im probably one of the few who doesn't use a SSD drive :/

Then get one.

SSD can transfer files around 500mbps on average where a good hdd is like 300 max, plus there's almost no access time on an ssd, all files can be read instantly. If you install your os onto an ssd your boot time will also be reduced.

I have 4 hard drives, 2ssd and 2hdd. One ssd is for games since you also cut load times gaming on an ssd is pure bliss.

I remember the days of morrowind on the first xbox with load times into the minutes, I built a pillow house after looting all the pillows in the game and had tons of armor and loot just laying around my regular house, the days of fog and limited distance rendering.

At least get a 240ish GB for your OS.
