Best bet is put your Motherboard + CPU + DDR3 up for sale. Someone would most likely see that as better than what they have, and an affordable upgrade for what it is they wish to do.
Best bet to upgrade would be:
B250M or Z270M Motherboard (MicroATX boards so you could re-use your Case)
7th Gen LGA-1151 CPU; such as i5-7500 or better
DDR4-2400 or better
-or-
B350 mATX Motherboard
AM4 CPU such as R5 1500 or better
DDR4-2400 or better
Don't have any SSD for OS drive? It's time to look towards getting one.
What Windows are you on for Gaming? Download and use Win10 64bit
You might as well have all perspectives ^ if you really want to reuse your ddr3.
But yes you can sell off your current FX/mobo/ddr3 and start over or go with an i7 4790k and reuse the ddr3 ram but you'll still need a new LGA 1150 mobo.
There're some half decent budget ryzen chips coming out on the 11th maybe wait for some more official reviews.

i7 4790k is still a strong gaming cpu ^.
If I go with DDR-4, I would also think about other CPUs and probably really wait for Ryzen5 Benchmarks. I was thinking about Ryzen anyway in the first place, but then I saw it's DDR-4 only...
Btw. I already have an SSD, but still Win7. I'm actually still quiet confident with it.
They work on W7. Ryzen actually runs faster on W7 than W10 until Microsoft fix it. They are not "officially supported", not that they don't work.
In fact Microsoft is blocking window 7 update on Kaby Lake. If it doesn't work, why bother blocking? Some conspiracy theorist will tell you it's because W10 sucks (look at Ryzen's case) so Microsoft wants to stop people comparing performance with W7.
Imho its DUMB to sell your RAM.
Buy a used Z97 board with 4790k for cheap and you will BEAST gaming for the next 10 years at 1080p and 1440p.
The 4790k overclocked at 4.5ghz on air cooler will run x2 GTX 1080 ti's in SLI no problem.
DDR3 being outdated ?? You got to be ♥♥♥♥♥♥ kidding me when benchmarks in the real world enviroment show little to non difference with RAm speeds in the majority of games.
You can downclock the RAM to 1000mhz and you still get the same fps in 75 out of 100 games.
If you get a 3000mhz RAm the only thing you re doing is spending 5 times the money for RAM.
in other words VERY BAD value for money.
Save your money get a Z97 board and 4790k.
Wisdom.
I am running a dated build with one at 4.7 , 16gb of Mushkin Blackline ram and a 970 oc'd. I run most games at high to ultra in 1440 with no ill effects.
The 1080 is coming next month. nom nom nom..
The 4790K is good, but saying it's going to be a beast up to 17th generation Intel Core CPUs is absurd.
I said its gonna beast GAMING not other cpus.
Its a 2014 cpu that 3 years later is still the 3rd best cpu at gaming losing form the other 2 by a small margin , not to mention that the other 2 are essentially the same chip just revised with improvements.
4790K will BEAST gaming for the next 10 years. PERIOD.
If you re strictly a gamer the 4790K will last FOR EVER with the current meta (game developers programming games to drop the majority of the load at 1-4 cores)
P.S. Thats why many gamers/streamers didnt upgrade from their 4790K to the 6700k and the 7700k and probably half of them wont upgrade to the 8700k either.
