VERY weird question
So uh, I have a socket 775 Dell Dimension E510 that I plan on upgrading for use as a Microsoft Word slave.
It currently has a Pentium D and some ancient ATI card that doesn't work anymore. What is the best possible CPU upgrade while still using the same socket?

Would a GT 730 work with a socket 775 system?

A Microsoft Word slave?

why do you even need to upgrade anything for that??

You would have to find out what motherboard it has, then find the manufacturers page for it and then find in the support section the CPU support list, which will show you what CPU's will work on it.

you can use something like Speccy to find out the motherboard model number.

Its broken and has 1GB of RAM.
Also Windows Vista

I just decided to use the case and gut the whole system for a dirt-cheap Pentium build.
Its for family so yeaaah...

If that Dell is this format:
http://sm.pcmag.com/pcmag_in/photo/d/dell-dimen/dell-dimension-e510-tower-back_a9h7.jpg

Then you need to just get rid of the entire system; you can't reuse those Case.
Maybe salvage the HDD and/or data, that's about it really.

Since my G460 plan was ruined, how difficult would it be to install a new CPU, RAM, and GPU?

Its not an ATX form-factor on those Dell
Get a cheap ATX Case and a suitable ATX Power Supply

The problem with Dell, especially the older systems, they have their own motherboards, cases, connectors etc, that only dell specific parts/components will fit.

they also like to hide information on what motherboard model you have, what CPU's are compatable with that motherboard.

Dell computers are a minefield.

all i've been able to find out so far is that hte motherboard is an Intel 945g chipset, and it supports CPU's upto core 2 duo e6700.

but this information might be off, i'll try to do some more digging to see if i can find anything.

As for the graphics card, you will have to see what expansion slots it has, AGP (being very old graphics port), PCI or PCI-E x16 slot for a graphics card to be added.

Thank you. I'm having a hard time finding info myself. I found that it was using a 775 chipset from their customer support website, but they're probably wrong knowing Dell.
I can't upgrade the motherboard/CPU gen/RAM like I hoped, so this is the only way.

Searches suggest That computer has a Radeon X300, which is a PCI-E graphics card, the GT 730 is a PCI-E graphics card so should work on the motherboard. Might run at a slower bus speed because of the older generation PCI-E slot.

Also found the motherboard:

Dell 0HJ054
which is a Micro-BTX motherboard (custom made by a company for Dell).

search for it online to confirm it is the motherboard that you have?

the socket type for the CPU is 'LGA 775/ Socket T'
RAM DDR2 400mhz DDR2 533mhz (Max usable RAM is 4GB, so max per channel 1GB)

if you search online 'Dell 0HJ054 CPU support list' you can find a list of compatable CPU's.

note that this might require a bios update to support all CPU's listed, you should do some research before buying any CPU to make sure that it will work on that motherboard.

BTX is LGA-775, but the reason I say look at the back is because that alone you can see if it is BTX layout or not, if it is, ATX motherboard can not work in that Case, and the Power Supply will not be compatible either. It was a minefield when it released and I refused to sell those when they were around. Spent alot of time convincing customers that layout would fail.

Now you see what do we have with some cases, something we could have done all along, just flip the ATX board to the other side; if that's how you want the layout to be.

I honestly still scratch my head when I think what was it Intel was trying to do here, besides given OEMs something that would royally screw over customers who wished to upgrade at any point really. Cause even back then we had 2 slot GPUs, to which do not fit in BTX systems.

I'm not changing the motherboard. I'm changing the RAM, CPU, and GPU (and adding a 500GB HDD later)
