Setting Fans to 100% Always?
I saw a jayztwocents video where he did this to increase performance, and it actually worked for him. I try it myself, and at idle, temps dropped from 47 to 38... pretty good right? But is this bad for the gpu? I dont want to try it in games because i dont know if itll mess something up.

The GPU is an r9 290 vapor x. It gets to 80-81 while gaming and doesnt move from there. I figured, well maybe it can perform better if it was capped to stop at 80C doing this technique.

So whats the scoop?

It will not improve your performance but if you want to play around with the GPU fans speed you can do that in the Radeon-settings in the overclock menu or make a custom fan curve with software like MSI afterburner.

Use that if you must, prior to launching games. Set the fans back to auto when you are done gaming. As there is no point to them being forced to run at high speeds when not gaming.

Will this allow me to have it automatically go to 100% when not using games or something? so that i can achieve what badmotha said without having to manually switch it

Download MSI afterburner and create a custom fan curve that will push the GPU fans to 100% when it reaches 50c.

Nothing does it automatically; you do it, otherwise it is on auto controlled fans.

Use MSI Afterburner. If you are using something else for this, like the AMD software, be sure those Clocks and Fan Controls get put back to defaults and applied before using other software to control your GPU.

Why is this new to folks? We've using controlling our GPUs using apps like MSI Afterburner for many many years.

Because we are plebs :)
Thank you gentlemen, have set it to go to 100% after reaching 60. Good day!

It's more a factor of noise level, that's the main reason fan speed is lowered or even turned off at lower temperatures, so your PC doesn't sound like a figher jet about to take off.

I can't even hear my PC, but it's a stealth build with also noise foam, larger heatsinks, and noctua silent fans, etc. It's better to have a larger fan on lower RPM, than a smaller fan on max RPM. They can deliver almost the same airflow, but at a much lower noise rate.

well the temps never go above mid 60s now while gaming so thats crazy improvement.

Yup, pretty much ever most recent NVIDIA GPU I have has been like that. And folks not believing that it's running on air, LOL.

Overall though, for AMD GPUs, under 90*C is perfectly fine. I know it sounds "hot" but they are designed for it. If you are ok with the noise, then by all means, crank up the fans when needed. However, not a good idea to leave them manually cranked up (like forced to 100%) all the time, as all you are doing there in non-Gaming situation is wearing out your fans much faster.

I remember that video of Jay and I'm not sure why he made that. Thats kinda like going back to the old times when CPU's ran at 100% at all times and power saving didn't exist, at least that is what I read somewhere. There is a reason why a thermal profile exists and you shouldn't run your fans at full speed at all times unless you love killing your fans and replacing them often.

I love Jay but honestly, yea he's been all over the place lately with his videos.
He was one who was knocking Ryzen quite a bit, simply because he did not understand the limitations that are there for now, until various fixes come along. He has been great over the years but he's been so stressed lately, I don't think his head is in the game so-to-speak sometimes lately.
