March 2017 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 SP1 - KB4012215
So, after struggling mightily with my PC running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 this week while trying to get a successful install of this month's updates, I thought I would post my troubleshooting and results in case anyone else is plagued by a similar problem.

Issue: monthly updates hang during download, never exceeding 45% downloaded after 12+ hrs in process, and fail eventually, if not sooner.

Workaround: manually install KB4012215 from Windows Update Catalog (http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Home.aspx), then install the rest of the monthly updated through Windows Control Panel - Windows Update per usual.

Result: Metro Last Light crashes system -- max rpm on GTX 580 fan, and black screen, unresponsive system. This is initially preceded by an interruption from the OS stating that the Windows Color Scheme should be changed due to slowly responding system. (The game performed flawlessly prior to updates.)

Fix: Rollback system by uninstalling KB4012215. System stability and game performance is flawless as before. ***Note that part of the monthly rollup update is "Microsoft Graphics Component" per the following link: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/22801/windows-7-sp1-and-windows-server-2008-r2-sp1-update-history ***

IMHO the newly implemented "rollup" method of pushing security, stability, and other fix patches to Windows is seriously flawed. To fix a system instability issue caused by a SINGLE piece of the rollup, you need to uninstall ALL patches that are part of the rollup ...

Not cool, Microsoft, and most unwise.

This may be the final push that lands me firmly in the Linux gaming community. Why not, eh? Already running Debian on my laptop and Raspberry Pi 3, and openSUSE on my media server ...

Yes, the time has come.

FYI

You can use your Win7 key to activate Win10

May be something to think about doing

Stop suggest this bs to W7 users - we have reasons, why we do not use this Redmond's abortive.
M$ systematically breaks W7,8 - no one wants to use W10, so they release updates that make 7,8 inoperable on Kaby, Ryzen ... but because of an bug they also make the system incompatible with older processors :steamsalty:

THANK YOU!

A conspiracy theorist might suggest that the reason why W7 support has been disabled for the new cpu's is that they run faster on W7 than W10. I read somewhere that this was the case for Ryzen but I don't know if it is true or not.

My pc has hung completely twice after receiving the latest W10 update.

oh im sorry, i didnt know i was talking to you and trying to give you an option outside of formatting Win7 or switching to Linux

Its only an amount of time before Win7 loses complete support anyway, so thats probably partially why they did it.

Win7 is still good sure, but it isnt the best anymore.
