8 pin GPU connector cable?
I am working on upgrading my ASUS ROG G20AJ from its existing Nvidia GTX 960 (6 pin connector) to a Nvidia GTX 1070 Founders Edition (8 pin connector).

In the existing configuration (GTX 960), both connectors require a 6 pin cable, which I have. The upgraded configuration requires an 8 pin on each end, which I do not have. I procured a set of cables "power cables" from Micro Center, but those do not work. Well, correction, I have a 6+2 to 8 pin connector that works on the 6+2 side only, but not the 8 pin on the other side.

So talking through this, it seems the answer would be a 6+2 (male) to 6+2 (male) cable would be the answer, but I dont know where I would get one.

For additional clarity on this topic, the motherboard hosts both a 6 pin and 8 pin connection blocks. Due to the design of the computer, with the external laptop brick power supplies, I cant just simply change out the PSU.. I'm stuck with this configuration. I really just need help locating either a suitable 8 pin male to 8 pin male or 6+2 male to 6+2 male connector cable. (not an extension cable)

What is your PSU brand and model...?

So thats the thing... it uses 2x laptop style bricks which plug into the back of the case.. its really weird I know.. the bricks are 230w for the CPU/mobo and a 180w for the GPU.

A picture of the power supplies:

A look inside the case:

you need a new psu. that card wont be able to plug in to it. even if you did, there would not be enough power for it.

The 1070 draws only 150w, which would be sufficiently powered by the 180w dedicated external PSU.

the kind of psu you have will not be able to give the card the power it needs.

Pardon my ignorance, but how so? There's multiple documented builds out there using up to the 1080, which would max out the PSU at 180w.

Those ASUS ROG G20 are very similar to Alienware X51
It will be fine.

It already has 1x 6pin and 1x 8pin, so what's the issue?
the 6pin is black, the 8pin is red

thats just a picture I found on google for illustration purposes. I tried contacting ASUS about a missing cable, they were of no help.

I've looked at that and the pin connectors are not set up correctly. It looks like only the 6+2 pin configuration works on both ends. I have a 8 pin to 6+2 pin cable already and the 8 pin side does not fit, however, the 6+2 side does (squared off connection vs. angled connection)

Then I would contact ASUS, cause regardless of which GPU you got when the system was purchases, all those ASUS ROG like that should have included both a 6pin and 8pin wiring inside, so the system is ready for a GPU upgrade should the user decide to do that.

Tried that, they said they couldnt help. Sadly, that seems par for the course with ASUS, their after-purchase support has been lacking thus far.

I would maybe ask a place that sells those type of PC; maybe they could help.
