[Help] Intel Core i5-7600K or i7-7700K
Upgraded my GPU to a GTX 970 and it's gone as far as it can, time to upgrade my CPU. Upgrading CPUs isn't as simple when I was a kid. Bigger numbers don't always mean better when it comes to CPUs for gaming nowadays. Any advice one which direction I should go? I've heard they are top of the line gaming CPUs right now, without getting into the brand new AMD Ryzens and whether or not they are worth it...

What's your current CPU? It may be fine for the time being and you can postpone the CPU upgrade till say cannonlake appears. To me this moment looks like the worst for an update.

If you have a Microcenter near you, you can buy the 7700K for $300. I recommend i7s over i5s for gaming due to the newer titles taking advantage of more threads/cores.

AMD Phenom II X6 1100T 3.3 Ghz

It done suprisingly well and lasted me a long time, but it's starting to show it's age. Some games like Dishonored 2, just don't support it's SSE4a. (At least it didn't at launch. I think they patched it eventually)

It can still run games like Overwatch or For Honor great , but for CPU heavy games like large scale RTS, it just gets rekt. Can't get over 20fps in a large battle in TW: Warhammer, or Deserts of Karak. With Dawn of War 3 around the corner, I think it's time to upgrade if I want to enjoy games like that.

Woah...does Ashes of a Singularity have garbage optimization or something? 30-40 average FPS with top of the line GPUs in this CPU benchmark? I'm looking for a new CPU that can handle large RTS games...this isn't encouraging :steamsad:

I5 is used for gaming and nothing else

I7 used by streamers. get this if you want to start a twitch.

Yes I only game and get on interweb sites. I don't need my computer to start a twitch....

Unless you video-edit or do some extra background activity while gaming i7 over i5 is just money burnt.

The claims about future games using more threads/cores is moot too, as those have the SAME amount of cores, and the extra threads could run in parallel only if staying away from floating point, that is not really likely. Processors with 6 or 8 real cores may get a future boost but i7's HT hardly.

So buy i7 only in case you don't mind overpaying for no practically noticable improvement. Many other components could use the price diff for a better effect.

OTOH, if you play specific games, try to locate benchmark or fps data for those, measurement of actual use always beat any theory :)

Well, when looking at a few custom computer sites, if I start with the i5-7600K....

For the same price I can upgrade to the i7, or get 8 more gigs of RAM. You're saying I'd be better off with 8gigs of RAM in the grand scheme of things? I'm not going to get CPU bottlenecked a few years down the roadk with the i5?

EDIT: I do have a 120htz monitor, and that video with the benchmarks did show the i7 staying above 120 more consistnatly with more games...

Build it yourself and you can probably afford the extra Ram and an i7.

I'm out of practice and don't want to mess with modern liquid cooling systems. Plus I live in a cramped townhouse that doesn't really have a nice ESD safe place to install motherboards and CPU from scratch.

You don't need liquid cooling for i7. With budget air cooling you can OC to 4.8 GHz. With high end air cooling as competitive as liquid high end you can reach 4.9-5.0Ghz. To be honest a lot of the low end liquid are worse than budget air. A min 240mm radiator system to be decent, anything with a single fan radiator is garbage unless your case can't mount dual/triple fan radiator.

NO no no that's archaic thinking.

So single fan liquid cooling is actually worse? I had no idea.
Big Boom Boom 2017 年 3 月 19 日 下午 3:54
They are not better than budget air cooler, sometimes worse, and made of cheap stuff so not dummy proof like high end AIO with 240/280/360mm radiator. And very loud.
Connatic 2017 年 3 月 19 日 下午 4:02
Well the single fan liquid cooling I got with my 6 year old rig is pretty quiet...

Well I'm looking at custom built computer sites right now. And all of them only have one options for air cooling. You saying I'd be fine with that if I'm not willing to spend money on the high 240mm+ liquid?

Both cpu's will be limited by the gtx970. You won't get 120fps with it on most AAA titles at 1080p. So the i5 is the way to go if on a budget.

Buying a prebuilt is a trap as the components are often a step down in quality. For example with both these cpu's best performance is with DDR4 3000 ram which needs a Z mobo.

If you intend upgrading the gtx970 one day, there are two videos on you that should watch, both by digital foundry. One reviews the i5-7600k, the other reviews the i7-7700k. The videos show benchmarks for various games.

Also you may want to consider the non-K version of the i7-7700 vs the i5-7600k.
