Also note, the 1080 ti was released on the 10th but sold out pretty much everywhere within the first hour. Luckily enough i got my grubby lil paws on one.
Personally, a single more powerful gpu is almost always better than sli. You don't have to deal with more power consumption, heat etc etc, not too mention sli is broken in a lot of games.
A 1070 might actually be a good choice for 1080p gaming.
1080ti is NOT overkill for 1440p. I have a gtx1080 and it struggles with some demanding games @1440p.
A single 1070 would be much better. It would not have all the problems that come with SLI so it would be already worth it just because of that.
Are you playing 60fps 1440p?
144hz ofc. But i still see drops below 60fps in some demanding games.
Which is why i'm considering upgrading from gtx1080 to gtx1080ti.
I like the 1070 for 1080p 144hz but can't max out and still get 144hz so drop a extra hundred on a gtx 1080. Yes a 1080 for 1080p is overkill but you will have 144hz with max settings and if you ever get a 1440p monitor, you will be ready.
If you use 1080p 144 Hz monitor or 1440p 60 Hz monitor get GTX 1070, it has slightly better performance then GTX 980 Ti.
If you use 1440p 144 Hz monitor or 4K monitor get GTX 1080 Ti, it's the only graphics card out there that can run majority of games with 60 fps ultra on 4K, especially when overclocked.
Reason why GTX 970 SLI is not that great option for 1440p or higher resolution is that you will be limited by 4 GB VRAM while GTX 1070 has 8 GB and GTX 1080 Ti 11 GB.
Upgrading from 2x gtx970's sli to gtx1080ti would be an even bigger improvement.
