1440p 144hz or 4k 60hz?
I'm not really interested in waiting a year for 4k 144hz because a 1200 dollar monitor is completely out of my price range. However I current have a nice 460 dollar 1440p 144hz monitor with about 4 days left to return it. This is the hardest decision I've had to make about my new build and with the 1080ti coming out I've already returned my 1080 in preparation for getting it.

I play games like the witcher 3 that wouldn't benefit for 144 fps but I also do enjoy battlefield and any potential fps coming out at a higher fps. So I am torn because both monitors would be good for my playstyle. My budget on a monitor is about 500 dollars and I've found both types at 27 inches at that price range with great reviews.

but has anyone gamed with both monitors at one point in their lives and also enjoys open world games/rpgs AND competitive shooters like me? Can you chime in and give your opinion on which monitor you decided on?

I'm upgrading from a 24 inch 1080p 60hz monitor and definitely want a 27 inch.

I7 7700k and I will have a 1080ti when a decent aftermarket one comes out. Just sent my 1080 back due to the return window closing in.

I have only played around with a 4k/60hz monitor and currently own a 2k/144hz monitor. From my ownership, you can tell which I prefer. In my opinion, you don't notice the added visual fidlity of 4k that much on smaller displays that are 2 feet from your eyes. I think 4k is overhyped because of the TV market, where you can actually see a huge difference in quality. Therefore, I prefer the smooth fluidity of a high refresh 2k monitor instead. I recommend you buy both from a retailer/etailer with a good return policy and make your own decision after experimentation.

If you buy 1080 ti then buy 4k monitor. Who buys 1080ti for 1440. You are going to spent 890 euros for 1080ti(at least that how much ist cost here in greece). You can spend another 500 euros for a 27'' or 28'' 4k 60 hz ips monitor. I have GTX 970 and 1440p monitor. When i bought 1440p monitor DELLP2416D (24'' 1440p 60 hz ips) i saw huge improvement in graphics compared to 21,5'' 1080p that i had till then. Do that(get both 1080ti and 27 or 28 4k monitor) and you will have the best graphics possible. There are also 32'' 4k monitors but these costs 1000 euros a 27 or 28 4k 60 hz ips is the best solution for now.

Personally i'd go with 1440p/144 hz g-sync, while 1080 ti performs great at 4k, newer tittles like Deus Ex Mankind Divided or GR Wildlands are running like 40 fps in 4k, so you have to lower the settings already, you really don't want to spend that much money and lower the settings to get 60 fps, it's so much less future proof if you don't get 60 fps in some games now, how about in a year or two? 4k isn't worth it over low fps (under 60) with such a card, 1440p looks awesome already. Imo this generation isn't still 4k ready if you want max settings and 60 fps.

My thoughts exactly. Is g-sync worth the extra 200 dollars? I'm very happy with the monitor I have due to its price, it looks fantastic and is 1440p 144hz 27 inches. The only downside is its freesync, however I just didnt think g-sync was worth the extra 200 personally, but I haven't actually experienced it.

Well i dont have experience with it, but since 1080 ti still doesnt reach stable 144 fps in 1440p (except of doom which is running at 200 lol) then you could get some stuttering or whatever since its not capped at the refresh rate, gsync would fix that and you will get smooth performance all the time so id say its worth it if you are buying such expensive card already, but if you are happy with the monitor and it has freesync, you can risk it and wait for amd vega cards which might bring a powerful card for 1440p and you dont need to spend the extra for gsync, either do this or return the monitor and get a gsync one, kind of a waste to have freesync but you cant use it.

No gsync and 144 hz is NOT worth the 200 dollars/euros. NOT AT ALL!I am also very happy with my monitor that is 1440p 60 hz 24 inches. I paid only 300 euros for it(DELLP2416D) I didnt bought the 27 144hz because it costs 500 euros and i thought it wasnt worth the price foe what it ofders compared to the 300 euros 24 1440p 60 hz monitors. That why i advice him/her to get DELLP2416D for 300 euros instead of waisting money for just+ 3'' more and 144hz even if he dont want to get a 4k monitor. Also while most games dont run 60 fps on my 970 they are still fully playble o max settings even fi some of them run at about 40 or 30 fps and i have this monitor since June 2016. A 1080 ti will run all games at max settings 1440p 60 fps and 4k 60 fps most of them. But it will be able for many many years to run at 4k max settings even if not all of them run at 60 fps so in my opinion it is better to get 4k with 1080 ti than 1440p.

I suggest a 1440p 144hz right now unless you can afford a 1080ti and a 4K monitor.

1440p 144hz any day from 60hz to 144hz is an amazing difference but the extra jaggies at 1440p can be smoothed out with some aa you cant add extra refresh rate with some in game settings

4k 60 hz and 1440p 144 hz monitor have the same price now so 4k 60 hz is the best choice.

DON'T get a 4k monitor, 60hz 4k has bad ghosting, you will not enjoy it. I own a 4k monitor and don't use it for jack but 4k movies, waste of money, I prefer to play games and watch stuff on my smaller 1080p 144hz.
Revelene Mar 14, 2017 @ 9:44pm
It's up to you. Do you prefer higher refresh rates or higher resolution?

In my experience, I prefer to have high frame rate as a priority. I also don't see a huge difference between 1440p and 4K at standard desktop screen sizes. I do, however, enjoy the extra pixel count of 4K with larger screens (like televisions or larger monitors).

4K is harder to run, even having the 1080 Ti struggle on many games. I just don't believe that 4K is truly ready right now. Not only do we have to have the hardware, but we also have to have the developer have 4K in mind... Many people forget about the development side of things.

So, yeah, in my opinion, I'd recommend keeping the 1440p/144hz monitor. Unless you want to pony up a bit more and get 165hz and/or Gsync.

Gsync is a pretty nice technology. Works as designed and does it well. Allows for variable frame rate, no tearing, and less visual input latency than traditional vsync.

People looking for 120 FPS. A week playing at 120 FPS and you'd find it hard to go back to 60.
