GTX 1060 3GB vs 6GB

Hi,

I actually have to replace my MSI GAMING GTX 760 OC 2GB GPU, I am interested in MSI GAMING 1060 X3G or MSI GAMING X6G but not sure which one to grab, I am not the player who play at all max settings max AA, I usually play high settings 1920x1080p FXAA as AA.
I was wondering if 3 GB are enough for my usually settings or not, someone says yes someone no, I want stable 60 fps so in the future I would surely downgrade the settings and this probably means less HD textures etc. so less VRAM usage?

Hi Josh! it me again! I think you should go with the 6gb version for future proofing.

I would go with 6 GB if you can afford it, more future proof and overall better performance.
And you dont need to settle with high settings anymore, it can run majority of games maxed out with 60 fps 1080p no problem.

Thing is, even older games can be quite some vram hogs, often enough you need to reduce settings by quite a lot, and there is no designated one for textures i.e. The 3GB 1060 is also gimped a little further, and does perform worse than the 480 / 1060/6.

You probably gonna be fine with the 3GB version, but hard to tell what the future brings, so i wouldn't bother with the lower end cards anymore.
Maybe check out alternatives, i.e. MSI Radeon RX 480 Gaming X 8192MB (also cheaper models on the market).

Yes I saw AMD RX series but I actually would go on GTX 1060 because price difference is very little to RX 480 (I was undecided between RX 470 and GTX 1060 but I would have considered AMD for price, if price is that close I would go for NVIDIA.

Around 70 euro is price difference in my country but I will seriously start to think at the 6 GB version to not be bottlenecked in few months.

It depends. 6gb is definetly better but it depends on the game and how much vram it uses. Do your game have high resolution mods? do you run your games on ultra settings? It really depends. I have the 3gb version and I haven't had to run anything under 1080p60 on high

I saw a rx 470 MSI gaming 4G at 179.00 $, is 100$ less than a 1060 6G, is it an attractive offer or not?
I was planning to take the 1060 for 3/4 years, but considering 100$ less I could consider to hold the GPU for 2 years, is a rx 470 4G OK for 2 years or not worth it and better to spend 100$ more?
Before this offer I would not consider the RX for the slightest convenience but today I don't really know...
