Chkdsk can take a while just let it run. Pull the plug when it hasn't made any progress in 6 hours.

Yes it is unsafe to stop the diskcheck because it might be moving data IF it found anything wrong with the HDD.

Nvm it's finished all of a sudden
Yes it can be quite normal; basically when it's doing it on mechanical HDD; these are all rather slow; the actual app is doing things in the background, but it is doing so much, it is as if the app is locked up (like on a % for a lengthy period) but you can usually tell from the activity HDD LED on your system if it really is idle or not. But yea always allow these to finish.

It is why we warn folks just how lengthy it can be 60-90 mins, often times longer; all depends on the drive, its overall performance, as well as how much actual data is on the drive. As data takes alot longer to verify compared to empty/free space.

Take the time (like once a month) to run CHKDSK /R
once completed and you are back inside your OS again, do a Full Disk Defrag on HDD types (not any Flash or SSD types)

If you do anything that adds alot of new files to your drive(s) often (installing new apps, games, or recording audio/video, editing large 3d renders, uncompressed hi-res photos) your HDD types with these new files or changed files, they will get fragmented. This just means the data for any given file is scatters across the drive, in-turn taking longer and longer to read/write those files. Defragging your HDD types helps to maintain their overall read/write speed.

Just don't be obsessive when it comes to doing things like CHKDSK or DEFRAG

If chkdsk stand still for over an hour on the SATA2 drive this means that either the background program interferes with the process(uninstall AV + try do it in safe mode), or the disc is damaged and need to use the Victoria for DOS analyze and solve problems (ideal - to erase the entire disk and scan in Defectoscope mode)

I hope this is not the old Seagate - otherwise you'll have to wait for hours... or days

It's doing CHKDSK on C drive; so nothing is running; as it's doing this at OS bootup.
launch task manager... if chkdsk has 0 activity, 0 ram, then it already hung.
Again, when you run CHKDSK on the OS drive, the OS is not running.
It has to do that before booting into the OS.
my bad. didn't notice/read the part about OS drive chkdsk. :) embarassed here...
