It is for headphones. My onboard sound is OK but no amplifier.
Budget is very limited. The sound card I mentioned is on sale .
All I need to know is if anyone is using it and has any issues
For how much is it on sale?
You can get pretty high performance DAC/Amps for fairly cheap.
It's a good card for me.
I bought it because my onboard sound is not too good and also my front panel PC case audio sockets are broken and I can't replace them. Strix Soar allows to connect both speakers and headphones/headset at the same time to the rear of the PC case. But it does not have front panel connector pins so your headphones should have a cord long enough to reach from the back of the computer case (I have 3m).
The only driver problems are:
1) When using Strix Soar sound output, Flash plugin crashes in Mozilla Firefox browser when the Flash plugin tries to play a sound. In other browsers (Edge, Chrome, opera) the Flash plugin works ok.
2) uTorrent sometimes works very sluggishly and sometimes (not when downloading in background, but when you do something with its inferface) hangs for like 30 seconds. This happens not only just with ASUS Strix series sound cards, but also with many modern ASUS motherboards when using ASUS's onboard sound drivers. And this happens only with uTorrent.
So probably ASUS sound+uTorrent = problems.
Sale ends today so bought it.
I use chrome to play flash videos. Once its in the PC, will try it. The front panel audio is not used so not an issue.
I do not use utorrent or anything similar on my gaming computer. They can install who knows what on your computer. Anythign like that is either on a virtualised machine or my old old laptop.
Presently have ASUS xonar DGX + corsair vengenace 1300 headset (out of warranty & falling apart). It was OK. I use the onboard sound which is decent quality but no amplifier for external powered speakers for watching movies.
Now I have: Kingston HyperX Cloud Revolver Pro Gaming Headset. Quite an improvement in quality.
Just bought the STRIX SOAR sound card. I will put it in the machine tomorrow.
I am not interested in more external items as its more clutter.
The sound card it seems is a fairly good one and it seems one the best without going for an external setup or really expensive card.
Those were the two items that fitted the budget. $200 Australian in a sale.
