If you are using headsets on PC; then you typically can do 5.1/7.1 on all headsets, through virutal surround. Which is why the USB do them, cause these have their own audio chips that allows that.
If you have sound card from Realtek, ASUS, Creative; you have ability to do Virutal Surround with all 3.5mm headsets. Its just a software logic switch.
DO NOT confuse headsets of any kind, with doing actual 5.1 or 7.1 with muliple physical speakers to make up the surround sound; they are not comparable. Using stereo headphones and enabling Virutal Surround, just ensure that Movies and Games that are outputting in 6 or 8 channels of audio, can actually all be heard with Stereo speakers/headset.
Overall, USB headsets are poorly powered and typically all junk.
3.5mm is better when you already have decent onboard audio or sound card.
USB is better suited for Consoles or Laptops.
