Is the i5 4460 still viable?

Hey guys, I recently upgraded to a 1060 gb, and right now my fx 6300 is bottlenecking it. I have 16gb of ddr3 ram and I plan to keep it while still getting a cpu upgrade. I was looking at the 4460. Any thoughts on this?

if you plan to buy new pc components now, choose from 7th gen like i5-7500 but needs ddr4 memory or wait for latest amd ryzen cpu... possible competitive pricing from both intel and amd...

Yes it is still damn good processor upgrading to the latest thing might get you at the very most %5 increase not worth it unless you just want to upgrade to an i7

It's a waste of money.... newer components don't have much better to offer at the very most he might see like a %5 increase in performance unless he just wants to get the K series so he can overclocking then yes it'll be worth it

It's better than a FX-6300.
May I suggest getting it used if you're going to buy such "old" components anyway? Because it surely is around used. Well, that or something else like it.

If going for something new with DDR4 then I would too wait and see what the prices of Ryzen end up being and if it wasn't for the available RAM I would had suggested something like the i5 7400 or whatever instead ATM.

Ryzen R5 1500, Pro 1500, Pro 1600 or 1600X? :)

If youre getting a CPU now then dont go with something that old. Stick to Intel i5-7500 and sell your DDR3. It's worth it

It's 25% stronger than the 4460. Which is quite a large power boost.

the newest bang for buck intel cpu is a cheap pentium g4560 which can trade blows with 6th gen intel core i3-6100.
i think 7th gen intel core i5 will have much to offer than very old 4th gen i5-4460.

The G4620 trades blows with the i3 6100 however an i3 6100 won't put you too far ahead of an overclocked FX6300 and in a few games like http://www.techspot.com/review/1180-overwatch-benchmarks/page5.html and Star wars Battlefront the i3 6100 will put you behind the FX6300, so if you're looking to alleviate being held back by the FX6300 I'd be looking at better intel offerings than budget G and i3.

You do realize Ryzen will be DDR4 only.

Ps, for the sake of $30 the 1231 v3 puts you at i7 4770 levels, the i5 4460 4 core isn't faring as well as that in newer games that use more cores/threads.

I see it this way --
You don't want to go over budget(which is fine).
You don't want to get DDR4 RAM(which is also fine).
You don't want to sell your existing DDR3 RAM(absolutely fine).

Then... the way I see it, you are answering your own question on whether or not the i5 4460 is still a viable option for you or not. I mean, there isn't any real option left for you to be flexible. Its an open and shut case really.
