Get my AMD 8350 FX Black Edition to 5ghz
I've overclocked before but nothing major. With this MSI motherboard it has an auto OC option which gives me 4.35ghz but I have seen people brag about 5 and that's where I'd like to be.

I have a Corsair water cooler which is a little old but still works perfectly.

Windows 10
32gigs DDR3
GTX1080 FE
MSI 970A-G46
EVGA 1000 watt PSU

8 fans.
two 120mm intake up front
two 120mm on the radiator in the exhaust position (one 3000rpm and a 1400rpm)
two 80mm on the ram sticks
one 140mm exhaust up top
one 120mm 3000rpm mounted directly behind the motherboard on the opposite side of the cpu

Idling I'm at 24c and under load it gets up to 47c.

If there's any other information I left out I apologize.

You might want to try the new Kabylake i5 7700K if you want extreme overclocking. It might stand a chance for hitting 5 GHz - the older 6700K it's based on could hit 4.8 with good enough cooling.

Kaby can clock to over 5Ghz fine, mine is running at 5.1Ghz..

For my two cents, if you're not buying this year you should buy in 2019.

With that mobo, he needs to get a replacement as soon as possible. It won't be able to overclock much - it's an MSI.

He should just upgrade to Kaby Lake and it will easily last him for many years.

If he really wants maximum performance there is always https://siliconlottery.com/
Likely better to wait for Ryzen.

Ryzen is unlikely to outperform Kabylake.

Yeah. I don't see them blowing away Kabylake. It's more likely that they will be weaker but try to undercut Intel in price by making them cheaper.

6 and at-least 8 core Ryzen is likely to outperform quad-core Kabylake.

I assume I have the proper cooling setup, right? I mean the thing is LOUD when both 3000rpm fans and the GTX1080 turned all the way up.

I think I have the extra power to supply that extra 80 watts to my cpu.

If all I'm going to get is an extra .35ghz is it even worth the extra fine tuning?

http://www.overclock.net/t/946407/amd-motherboards-vrm-info-database

It's not if you have extra watts in your psu to give it another 80w it's the mobo won't handle it, you've got one of the more basic mobos at 4+1 power phase and 125w cap.

I'm not going to lie. I had very little knowledge when I bought all the pieces to my rig. The only things I was concerned about was can I afford it with my crappy little checks and are they compatible with each other. It's been a couple years and the motherboard has been dependable. It's been through a 6 core and the 8 I have now. The 6 was just sold to save money on the 8 core upgrade. It's been through power surges, accidental unplugs, stuff like that and it's still kicking.

Now I'm making more money and can afford the good stuff, not budget materials. This time I'll do my homework. All in all I don't think I did terrible. It plays any game I throw at it and the only hardware issues I've ever had were a failing PSU and an SSHD that just dropped dead way within warranty life.

Your build is excellent, but it's old and no longer compatible with modern technology. I would change to a new platform rather than replace the whole PC.

Just for reference ^ since it's in your library, there really isn't a huge diff in most newer games.

I really don't plan on ditching my FX8350 anytime soon I figure I'll stick a GTX1070 on it if I ever can afford one.

According to that article intel's more expensive and it's not even that much faster. So now I have a whole new question... is there a motherboard that will support my 8350 and use DDR4? I looked around for a day and most of what I saw were DDR4 Mobos which didn't appear to support the AM3+ Socket....

Actually i5-7600k is 70% stronger per core than the FX 8350 and 80% stronger in quad core games, in both stock and overclocked.

No, there is no AM3+ mobo with DDR4. But I HIGHLY suggest getting rid of your FX CPU as it is heavily bottlenecking you. You are losing significant FPS.

On this setup I'll just keep running it. When I start on a new one I've already picked out an i7. This current rig is my budget gaming pc. It was rushed and pieced together like a rat rod.

No there are not and you already have lots of DDR3.

It is not essential to bring the FX 8350 @ 5.0 GHz... 4.5 ~ 4.6 GHz are sufficient, but
to play better with the AMD FX processors, try G-RegTweak.
Search it on G+ (see the readme file, first).
